Geeks Guide to Dating

I won’t lie to you, ModCloth readers. I just emailed my colleagues and told them I’d be off the grid in early March. The reason? Some video games are coming out that I just have to play. Few things make me happier than diving into a game with an awesome story, and getting lost in a new, beautiful world.

And that’s particularly the case with the Final Fantasy series, with their unique characters, incredible settings, and sweeping, often heartbreaking love stories. But since playing video games at home with your significant other is definitely a poor idea for a dreamy Valentine’s Day, I’ve decided to just look to the series for a little date night inspiration. That seems safe, right?

So whether you’re crazy about science fantasy role-playing activities like Final Fantasy or simply want to surprise your significant other with a unique night out, here are 4 video game-inspired date night ideas that will make for a great V-Day.

Final Fantasy III (or VI)
The Game 411: While there isn’t a lot of romance in the game (save for Locke and Celes), there is one solid date idea in it. On board Setzer’s airship, there’s a big opera scene, which is one of my favorite images in video game history.
Date Idea: The theater! The opera! Passionate and intimate, afterwards, head out for a late dinner or a drink, where you can talk about the show.

Final Fantasy VII
The Game 411: If it’s been years since you’ve played FF7, here are two things you should know. One, you should revisit and play that game immediately. Two, the Gold Saucer is a giant amusement park and tourist attraction in the game’s world.
Date Idea: Sure, right now the weather is pretty cold and the idea of going to an amusement park is probably the last thing on your mind. But it doesn’t have to be something outdoors. Pick a place where you can walk around and explore things together, like a carnival or museum exhibit.

Final Fantasy VIII
The Game 411: There’s a standout dance floor scene between characters Squall and Rinoa.
Date Idea: Go dancing! But make sure you have some time to spend talking to one another. If it’s a particularly loud club with overbearing music, that won’t work.

Final Fantasy X
The Game 411: A major plot point of Final Fantasy X is the love between Tidus and Yuna. It’s hard not to swoon along with the two of them as the story progresses, and the iconic scene where the two of them kiss in the water… well, it’s the stuff desktop wallpapers are made of.
Date Idea: A romantic stroll along the waterfront? Not a bad idea.

Now, go forth! Good luck, and share your Final Fantasy-inspired rendezvous below!
