Unearthing the Sounds of Gardens & Villa

With festival season quickly gearing up, we’re making our lists of bands we’re excited to see and hear — which is nearly a part-time job in and of itself — since there’s no shortage of new and interesting music to choose from every time we cruise the airwaves or the web. This week, we’re jamming to just one of the bands featured from this year’s exhaustive list for Austin’s SXSW line-up, Santa Barbara’s own Gardens & Villa.

The group emerged in 2008 and has released two albums since then, each distinctly different. Heavy on synth and layered beats, their sound is infectious and unique — if not for the simple fact that lead singer Chris Lynch wields a bansuri flute like it’s going out of style. During live performances, he even rocks a fringed, suede papoose for extras. Take a listen and tell us what you think in the comments below. And look for our full playlist of SXSW favorites next week! — Amy, Customer Care Assistant Lead

About Amy K.

Born in the basement of the Alamo, Amy is a native Texan who enjoys a good book, a loud song, and the presence of fuzzy creatures. When she's not writing, you can find her sifting through stacks of vinyl, or combing racks of vintage wares.
