It’s no secret that Story by ModCloth readers are some of the most stylish peeps around, so we decided to kick off an exciting year-long campaign titled #inspiredbyyou. And it’s just that — useful, whimsical blog content that’s inspired our ModCloth customers, readers, and beyond. Each month, we’ll tap fabulous storytellers and ask them to share their expertise right here on the blog. What better way to celebrate the ModCloth community than to showcase the incredible work being created by our fans?
Hello, ModCloth! We are Erin Thiessen and Stefanie Hiebert of the blog Oh So Lovely. We live in Winnipeg, MB, Canada and we run a brick-and-mortar vintage shop called Rhymes With Orange, as well as a mobile vintage shop in a 1956 camper trailer.
With the Oscars just around the corner, we thought that it would be fun to put together a guide to throwing an old Hollywood-themed Oscars party! The awards have always been such a glamorous event, especially during our favorite eras — the ’50s and ’60s — so we thought we would pay tribute to that by showing you how to throw a vintage-inspired party of your own.

What to Drink
In the Oscar-winning film Casablanca they drank French 75s, and just like the ending of the classic flick, the drink is bittersweet and perfect for your bash.
2 oz gin
1/2 oz lemon juice
1 tsp simple syrup
5 oz champagne or sparkling wine with gold flakes to make it extra festive
Pour the lemon juice, gin, and simple syrup* into a shaker with ice cubes. Shake well. Stain into champagne flutes and top off with champagne. Add lemon twist for garnish. Cheers!
*To make simple syrup: bring 1 part water to a boil an add 2 parts sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool and thicken.
What to Eat
No vintage-themed party would be complete without good old fashioned fondue. Not only is it super simple to make, but it’s fun to eat and is a good way to get everyone involved. There is only one rule when eating fondue: Any time you drop something into the pot, you have to reveal a secret!
Ingredients (from allrecipe.com, makes 24 servings):
1 cup white wine
1 tablespoon flour
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 cup Gruyere cheese, cubed
1 cup Cheddar cheese, cubed
1 cup Emmentaler cheese, cubed
Bring the wine to a boil in a small saucepan while melting the butter in another saucepan over medium low heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
Once the flour is cooked, slowly stir the wine into the flour mixture. Add the cubes of cheese and stir until melted.
Move mixture into a fondue pot and serve immediately.
What to Wear
Last but not least, it’s important to dress the part. We put together two ModCloth looks (one fancier, and one more casual) that we think would be fitting to watch the show in style.
