Even though I was a child of the ’90s, I never had MTV. Instead, I had something called the The Box, a TV channel where people called in and ordered music videos in real time. That meant I’d see the same ones over and over, and that’s also why I got mad skills when it comes to reciting dozens of early-’90s hip hop and dance jams. In 1990, Deee-lite’s “Groove Is in the Heart was one of the most popular requests on The Box, and I was instantly hooked. Lead singer Lady Miss Kier was the mastermind behind their over-the-top image — talk about a style icon in the making! That beat! Those colors! That catsuit!

“Enjoy – enjoy – enjoy!” That’s what I remember the three Es in Deee-lite stood for. Those 1990s house/pop/dance favorites were all about fun, from their groovy jams to their utterly original aesthetic.

Lady Miss Kier’s look teetered between then-current club kid culture and psychedelic disco mania. She rocked shiny catsuits, Fluevog Munsters, and Pucci-esque patterns in a mish-mash of fabulously fun fashion, while her cohorts Supa DJ Dmitry and DJ Towa Tei had their own outrageous outfits.

Having studied at the Fashion Institute for Technology in New York, LMK sold her bright and playful designs to club goers and DJs, before getting behind the microphone (and eventually the turntable) herself. She graced the cover of Vogue, and Elle named her one of the “Top Influential Music Style Icons” ever.

These days, Lady Miss Keir is still touring and traveling the world, bringing the party wherever she performs, and her eye-catching ensembles continue to inspire me to have fun with my own fashion.

Do you ‘deee-lite’ in a good classic dance jam? Check out a few of my favorite pop songs from the early ’90s below,  and be sure to share your muse in the comments!

About Cindy

Pun intended. Cindy loves dreaming up witty quips and groan-worthy wordplay. In fact, you could say this girl just wants to have puns. As an avid fan of the written word and a librarian at heart, she also loves used bookstores, especially ones that harbor cats. Vintage clothing, cocktails, and ephemera are a few of her favorite things.

I remember The Box! My dad blocked it on our TV so I had to go over my friend’s house to watch it. haha

And by blocked, I of course mean that he took control of the clicker and never let anyone watch it, because that was our version of parental blocks in the 90s.
