Prom Survival Kit
While we may be fans of toting around the largest bag we can find, when it comes to special occasions, smaller is definitely better. But when your clutch is roughly the size of a credit card, where do you stash all that stuff? With prom season nearly here (and wedding season always here), we’re offering up our tips for how to create the ultimate formal occasion survival kit. It includes everything you need should the evening go awry, so you can save the day if a friend’s dress tears, your hair wilts, or food is nowhere to be found.

To prove all of this can fit into the tiniest of totes, we chose the Sweet Structure Clutch as our evening bag of choice. Then, we put a velvet jewelry bag to work as a discreet satchel in which to place the essentials (if you don’t have a similar bag available, a velvet drawstring bag is also easy to whip up on the sewing machine), once you’ve chosen your clutch, it’s just a matter of narrowing down what you really need. We recommend:

Bobby pins: In case your hair takes a tumble or the chignon of a friend is in need of saving, use these handy pins to keep hair in place.

Double stick tape: Use this to secure a frayed hem, as fashion tape to keep low necklines in check, and to keep straps from slipping off your shoulders. Be sure to remove the roll from its package to save room.

Hair ties: Stash a few hair ties – like the It’s the Glitter Things Hair Tie Set – in your purse to whip up a chic topknot or ponytail for when the evening winds down, and to have on hand to help out a friend (because you know someone will be asking for a hair band).

Lip balm: A tiny tube of lip balm is always a good idea, it can be used for its intended purpose, or in place of smoothing cream for stray hairs.

Food bar: We firmly believe in keeping “emergency snacks” handy at all times. Choose a smaller, all natural food bar to keep in your clutch, just in case you need to refuel after a dance-off.

Gum: Need we explain? Stash just a few sticks — rather than the whole pack — to save on space.

Sewing kit: Pick up a tiny sewing kit at the craft store or pharmacy, and you’ll be everyone’s go-to gal for quick stitch fixes.

Clear nail polish: Grab a tiny bottle to touch-up chipped manis and stop stocking runs in their tracks.

Safety pins: Use them to fasten broken jewelry clasps, buttons, or snaps, and anything else that may come undone while you’re rocking out.

When you’re ready to pack everything away. Simply place the bobby pins and safety pins inside the sewing kit case, and pack everything away into your velvet bag. Then, just grab your ID, cash, and keys, and you’re good to go!
