We love to celebrate gutsy individuals here at ModCloth; it’s always inspiring to hear about an employee’s overseas adventure, or see a Style Gallery pic of someone totally owning a daring, one-of-a-kind look. So of course it’s a no brainer that we’d cast bold women, such as May’s Model of the Month, Laura, for our photo shoots. Paging through the premiere issue of The Style Book, you might not expect that the glowing gal in the pretty party dress is also a dirt biker and amateur surfer. But hey, that’s just the kind of well-rounded ‘woah!’-man we adore around here.
Learn more about Laura in our model Q&A, then leave a comment about the bold endeavors you’re embarking on this #ModSummer!
What’s your favorite part about being a model?
I love being a model because of all the amazing people I have met. I have friends from every stage of my career, and it’s exciting for me to see their progress and success and for them to see mine. Let’s be honest — I also really love clothes.
Who has been inspiring you lately?
I have been inspired by successful women, always, but especially lately. I have also been watching the ASP surfing competition, and I am so impressed with Lakey Peterson, Stephanie Gilmore, and the rest of the pro surfer girls. Strength, guts, talent, and beauty all rolled into one.
What’s your biggest goal or dream? The sky’s the limit!
My biggest goal is to be satisfied with my life. At the end of the day, I want to know that I worked hard for everything I wanted, whether or not I succeed. It’s my goal to remember to try for everything I want in this life and to not let fear or other people hold me back. Maybe I’ll be a pro surfer/model/CEO/fashion icon/ukulele master. Why not?
What was your favorite fashion fad growing up? Are you glad it’s gone, or are you eagerly awaiting its return?
Body glitter and platform shoes were my favorite trends growing up. I was obsessed with both! I am so happy that body glitter is over, and I am super excited that the ’90s are back, so I can wear platform sneakers (Spice Girls!) and jelly shoes! I kinda wish I still had one of those inflatable chairs, too.
What’s the one summer fashion staple you can’t live without?
My summer staple is big hats and lots of sunscreen. I can fry in 5 minutes without them, and I still have year-old tan lines from gnarly sunburns I got last summer. Also, big hats are just so classic!
Describe your ideal day off:
My ideal day is a day at the beach. I love to surf! I’m not very good at it, but I love it. It’s my workout of choice, my favorite date with my boyfriend, and the best for-fun activity I can think of.
What’s your secret talent or unexpected area of expertise?
My secret talent is extreme sports. I love rock climbing, ice climbing when I was young, riding my dirt bike, and surfing. I get a lot of bruises.
What makes someone beautiful?
I really think that beauty comes from one’s own sense of self and confidence. Truly confident people radiate happiness, and as Audrey Hepburn said, “Happy girls are the prettiest.”
