5 Films That Will Make You (Even More) Obsessed with Sharks

With Sharknado 2: The Second One premiering on the SyFy channel tomorrow, and The Discovery Channel’s Shark Week starting August 10, we’ve got sharks top of mind. Previews for the shark-wielding tornado sequel, anchored in New York City, ensure that we’ll have another gem of a camp-tastic movie on our hands. In the sneak peeks, hero Fin Shepard proclaims, “No one wants to get eaten, but I’ve been eaten. And I’m here to tell ya, it takes a lot more than that to bring a good man down … a lot more than that to bring a New Yorker down!”

Sharks aren’t just valuable to our entertainment culture, though, they’re also vital to our ecosystems. In fact, humans are often more harmful to them than vice versa. Millions of sharks are annually killed by people, according to the World Wildlife Fund, which also notes a person is more likely to be struck by lightning than be attacked by a shark.

Engaging themes from sharksploitation to conservation, here are the top five sharpest shark films we’ve seen.

JAWS

The movie that’s been instilling fear in ocean goers since the ’70s, Steven Spielberg’s campy classic, JAWS, still gives us chills as well as thrills.

Sharknado

The picture says it all, really. Sharknado inexplicably rocketed out of the kitschy, SyFy cult circuit into the mainstream immediately upon debut. We’re still not sure what it is about the film that outshone Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, but we’re amazed by flying sharks and their precision landings on humans. Plus, Ian Ziering was in it.

Deep Blue Sea

Scientists intent on exploiting a massive creature of the deep in their underwater laboratory? Check. Shark who downs a helicopter with a jump even The Fonz would admire? Check. And, oh, scene where shark wreaks revenge, using a scientist strapped to a gurney (the one freed from the helicopter) as a battering ram to destroy the lab’s main window and wipe it out? Check. Bonus: The film features LL Cool J, who rapped “Deepest Bluest (Shark’s Fin)” for the soundtrack? Pure check.

Raging Sharks

Aliens and sharks combine in this silly thriller set in yet another deep-sea research facility.

Great White Shark

Shark films don’t have to be all about sharksploitation to be entertaining. And scientists don’t have to be shark enemies. Great White Shark focuses on the conservation of these creatures, essential to the balance of the ocean.

Want a bite of the action? Be sharp, too, and show off your shark pride with these ModCloth finds.

What’s your favorite shark-based flick? Will you tune in to join Fin Shepard on another fin-tastic (har, har) adventure in the Sharknado sequel?

I wouldn’t call Jaws campy…it’s been parodied enough to make us forget what a fine piece of filmmaking it is (scene where they compare scars and when Quint talks about the sinking of the Indianapolis is one of the best). This film created the summer blockbuster and I have nothing but awe and respect for Spielberg (only 27 when he directed this!). Can you tell I’m a fan? Haha!

Jaws is the top of my list, but if we’re talking cheese-based flicks, here we go: Deep Blue Sea, Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark, Dinoshark, and of course, Jurassic Shark.

Hello my name is Sydney and I am addicted to cheesy shark movies.
