Between slap bracelets and pizza bagels, there’s no question that the ’90s were a time of creative innovation. While some of us spent our days writing AIM status message haiku, we were busy taking wardrobe tips from TV style icons, who managed to pair their oh-so-enviable friendships with flawlessly layered outfits. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite duos that knew a thing or two about how to master layering.

Rayanne & Angela on My So Called Life

Let’s start with flannel-wearing royalty – Rayanne Graff and Angela Chase. While they navigated the emotional turmoil of high school, these two defined cool with kaleidoscopic pattern mixing, oversized plaid shirts over nearly everything, and an absolute plethora of accessories.

We’re not even going to touch the Henley peeking out of Jordan Catalano’s corduroy coat, because this photo is probably enough.

Cher & Dionne from Clueless

While the cast of MSCL was all angst and grunge, the ladies of Clueless were working head-to-toe fashion with legit designer labels. Of course they taught us how to take take plaid from punk to posh (spoiler alert: cardigans and flip phones), but let’s not forget that Cher and Dionne also showed us about glam gym-ready layering.

Daria & Jane from Daria

Let everyone else rack up the points for creativity, because Daria and Jane took the prize for most monotonous. Daria rocked her deep green jacket on the regular, while Jane touted her maroon blazer, cuffed shorts, leggings, and similarly tough boots. Note Jane’s sleeves were always pushed high to allow for art making or crossed-arm sighing at a moment’s notice.

Unless you stuck around for the costume montage during the credits – and we know you did – these are just about the only outfits you ever saw on this salty duo.

Lisa Turtle, Jessie Spanno, & Kelly Kapowski from Saved by the Bell

Lisa, Jessie, and Kelly were never afraid to go bold with floral prints, flared hemlines, and the staple vest (we see ya, Spanno). Sure, the ladies of Bayside could have given the boys a few style pointers, but Lisa Turtle gets a special shout-out for her command of this shorts-on-shorts look.

Clarissa & Sam on Clarissa Explains It All

OK, we all know that Clarissa was the real star here, breaking down the any notion your mom had of ‘matching’ every afternoon, but can we take a moment to talk about Sam’s coordinating neon look? Pure BFF perfection.

Will & Ashley on The Fresh Prince of Bell Air

If we all had cousins as cool as Will, pairing our suspenders, T-shirt, hoodie, hat, and patchwork pants would be so much simpler! Even Carlton knew he was being outdone by Ashley, just look at him.

Aunt Jackie from Roseanne

Everyone’s favorite aunt from Roseanne required no stylish sidekick – Jackie rode alone. She was practically a pro at double denim.

About Chris

Every day, Chris gets one to three scoops closer to his dream of an ice cream-only diet. If he's not indulging his sweet tooth, Chris is using his child-like energy levels to play rubber snake pranks, converse with countless puns, and capture the world in photos as he walks. If you aspire to have a perfect Pittsburgh accent or have a passion for periodicals, he would love to talk over afternoon coffee.

And don’t forget Alex from the secret world of Alex Mack; she rocked layers as well as her ever-ubitiquious hats.

What about Blossom and Six from Blossom? Those hats were the best. Love the inclusions of My So-Called Life and Clarissa!!! At 16 yrs old, I was never more jealous of Angela Chase riding shotgun in Jordan Catalano’s red muscle car….
