Hello! I just ordered the Battalion Jacket in Ivory yesterday. I can’t wait to receive my new jacket, it looks super cute online. Do you have any suggestions of what to wear with it?

I think that it would be really cute worn with a crisp white or black button up, with dark jeans (skinny or trouser), and some black boots! I think you would want to pair it with        simple things because you don’t want to overshadow the jacket.

I need a dress for homecoming, any suggestions?

I love Modcloth and stalk the dress section, (bought several over the summer) but now it’s cold in NY and I keep looking and there are still only dresses that look like they could be worn in warm weather. Would love to see some with sleeves/heavier fabrics!

You’re right that most of the dresses are sleeveless, but you could always pair a nice summery-looking or sleeveless dress with some opaque tights, boots, and a cardigan or blazer! Adding just a few cold weather accessories like scarves and hats to a summer dress can easily update it for Fall/Winter!

Hi there! I am looking to do some shopping for my wife because she loves this site, but I have no idea what to get her! She is a size 6 in dresses, a size 8 shoes, and usually wears a small/medium in tops. She wears a lot of dresses so I was thinking about getting her a dress and then adding some additional items like shoes and some jewelry to wear to our New Year’s Eve Party. Next week, ModCloth will be unveiling a fun new contest (hint hint: it incorporates the autumn-friendly activity of pumpkin carving!). We can’t give way all the details now, but we can say that the contest will include a donation to an animal charity and we  want you to help us decide which charity the proceeds will go to! We’ve picked a local charity, a national charity, and Winston insisted we also include a pug charity. The three choices are the Washington Area Humane Society, the ASPCA, and the DFW Pug Rescue Club. Please read about the three organizations below and cast your vote using the poll to your left.

Obviously all three organizations are very deserving, but we can only choose one for this contest. However if any of these organizations find a special place in your heart, please consider independently donating supplies or money, or consider volunteering at your own local humane society or animal rescue organization! Your time is valuable too, and most of these organizations are always looking for a good volunteer.

Here’s some more information about the three charities:

Washington Area Humane Society:

The Washington Area Humane Society is a no-kill shelter, located in Washington County, just outside of Pittsburgh.  They are funded solely by private contributions, take in more than 4,000 animals annually, and investigate 700 cases of abuse.  Dedicated employees care for the dogs, cats, and rabbits 7 days a week, and they can only afford to pay them a little more than minimum wage. They receive no funding from the county and only a few of the municipalities contribute. Many people bring food, cat litter, and supplies, but they need monetary donations to meet monthly expenses.

ASPCA-American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals:

The ASPCA is a privately funded 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit and they were the first humane society to be established in North America. Today, it’s one of the largest in the world. The ASPCA is headquartered in New  York City, but has programs that extend across the country. Incorporated in 1866, they were the first humane organization that was granted the legal ability to investigate and make arrests for crimes against animals. Their mission is”to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States,” providing  leadership in three key areas: resources for pet parents, positive outcomes for at-risk animals, and serving victims of animal cruelty.

DFW Pug Rescue Club

DFW Pug Rescue Club Inc. is a non-stock non-profit organization for the rescue, care, and placement of unwanted, mistreated, or homeless pugs in Texas. It’s the largest pug rescue organization in the United States. They have rescued and placed over 3,800 pugs and rescue approximately 10 pugs a week.  Since they rescue ALL pugs, regardless of age or medical condition, they average approximately $100,00 a year in veterinary expenses. 100% of all donations are used to pay for veterinary care. DFWPRC is an all-volunteer oranization and they do not have a staging area to hold their pugs, so they depend on the generosity of their volunteers to provide foster homes for the pugs until they find permanent homes.

We recently asked our fabulous and fashionable Street Team to become style scouts and be on the lookout for great fashion in their hometowns to submit to our Seen Style post. Our first submission was by Street Team Member Alisha;  She spotted these three stylish girls at the Cloisters in NYC. Alisha says that the girls “are all avid thrift store shoppers and all three had fabulous looks styled completely out of items handed down from family members or thrift store finds.  Sophie and Jessica are roommates in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and Lauren is a mutual friend and former New Yorker who now lives in Baltimore.”

Ah, the working week is over, which in turn means my time interning with the fashion writing team here at ModCloth is over too.  It’s been a great summer, and I hope someday I’ll be back! Wish me luck for my journey back to England and my final year at university, and thanks for having me!

A few of us were lucky enough to attend the BlogHer Conference this July 23-25 in beautiful Chicago! We met a lot of inspiring and passionate women; one of them was  Sabrina, an employee at Sugar Inc! Out of a crowd of thousands, Sabrina stood out in this vintage bright orange dress. It’s hard to tell in this picture, but her golden hoop earrings with orange feather accents were just as attention-grabbing. Kudos, Sabrina; it’s not an easy feat, but somehow you managed to outsparkle the Chicago River!

You know Amy Hirt from her pretty poses all over ModCloth’s website. But what you may not know is that aside from fashion, Amy also possesses a passion for wine! This has led her to apply for a “A Really Goode Job” as a Lifestyle Correspondent at the Murphy-Goode winery in Sonoma County, California. As a Lifestyle Correspondent, Amy would be put to the task of exploring vineyards and tasting their wines, then reporting her experiences through various online media. Sounds dreamy, doesn’t it?

Of course, this extraordinary job opportunity calls for an extraordinary hiring process. In addition to filling out an online application, persons seeking this six-month appointment must also submit a 60-second video stating why they are the perfect fit for the position. This week’s style inspirations are brought to you by our favorite stylist, Vasil.

My last style inspiration for this week features Dennis R., 28. Dennis is one of the “regulars” on lookbook, but his style is anything but regular. This outfit, as well as most of his looks, are always trendy, but unique. He manages to create ensembles that are so catchy, but never too busy or heavy. One of my personal favorite shoes are hi-tops.  One of the best collections I have ever seen is the one by Adidas X Jeremy Scott. The winged hi-tops paired with awesome, denim harem pants make the look “A Look From Heaven.”

Back in January, Vasil predicted the style trends that would rule 2009.  Have you been seeing a shift in style towards looks defined by earthy colors, ruffles, silhouette-defining belts,  and mixed patterns in the last couple of months? We certainly have! Here are our favorite trend-based looks for this summer!

• Mixing solid colors with light prints adds interest and fun to your outfits, like in Berry Cobbler. This accessorized two-pieced ensemble makes you appear perky and fun.

• In terms of color, Vasil predicted a domination of earthy and muted tones, primarily light beiges, pinks, and nudes: along with bold color accents. The light pink of  Tier-amisu makes the outfit appear fresh and feminine, but the oversized bag is perfect for the girl with a lot on her plate and a lot to carry with her!

Ruffles, pleats, darts, and other cut details play a significant role in Spring/Summer 2009 trends.

• The Boulevard Before Dawn Dress can transform you from a work setting to a great cocktail party to any dressy summer event you want to attend. The combination of ruffles at the top and multiple pleats which follow the shape of the dress will create a balanced look and feature your feminine silhouette. The flowered purse and tights take this outfit that’s perfectly suitable for daytime outings to a more sophisticated “night out” look.
