We here at the ModOffices can’t seem to get enough of the Pin-up Dress. It’s classically chic, easy-to-wear, and its flattering cut earns it a rightful spot in the front of our closets. It’s also a perfect example of this week’s term – a set-in waist!

A fitted horizontal panel of fabric is sewn into the waistline of the dress, creating two seams (one above the natural waist, and one below) and one traffic-stopping look!

Hello ModLovers! Get out the mittens and gather around the campfire – it’s time for Fashion Dictionary! This week, I’m discussing a warm and cozy term that will be close to my heart (and neck, and head, and hands) all winter long – the cable knit!

Cable Knit is a knit stitch that is extra-thick, warm, and produces a look that resembles two cords (or cables) wrapping around each other.  Our Simply Snug Neck Warmer features this timeless knit pattern! Greetings ModLovers! After a several month hiatus, I’m back in the OOTW saddle, and I’m taking no prisoners! As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, fall is hands-down my favorite time of the year. Layers, coats, boots – what’s not to love?

For this edition, I wanted to style up the Just Fur Fun Vest. It’s far more versatile than anything made entirely of faux fur should be, not to mention cozy. The Ranchess Blouse’s warm fall hues were a given, as plaid was meant to be worn in the fall! The First Day Skirt in Study Hall is perfectly matchable without skimping on style, and the two-toned, button-up goodness of the Muir Woods Booties should speak for themselves.

I tied the look together with the How The West Was Cute Belt, the Finishing School Headband in Amethyst, and the Grammar School Knee Highs for added warmth. I can’t wait to wear this look to late-night bonfires or to pick out a pumpkin for our Pumpkin Carving Contest.

Greetings ModLovers, and welcome to this week’s edition of fashion dictionary! I took this opportunity to talk a little bit more about my new favorite shirt – The Dove Tail Blouse! Now, besides being simple with a retro flare, not to mention easy-to- match with everything, this sweet little number features this week’s term – bishop sleeves!

A bishop sleeve is characterized by a full sleeve, set into a standard-sized arm hole, and gathered into a banded cuff at the wrist. The look was first made popular in the 1850’s (talk about vintage!), and can also be called a “full bishop”. I love the vintage-inspired-secretary feeling it gives to almost any skirt.

It’s official! Autumn started at 5:18 EST on September 22nd. And I, for one, could not be happier. Layering for the cooler days ahead means making use of my entire wardrobe – even my favorite pieces acquired all summer long! That’s right – from shorts to rompers, strapless dresses to sheer tunics – your June through August staples can easily be styled for the brisk days ahead.

Read on to get my season-crossing looks!

For my first look (above, left), I turned the garden-party-perfect Rihanna Dress into a cider-sipping soiree style by adding the Dove Tail Blouse to the equation. It gives it a Blair-Waldorf-inspired feel that’s perfect for strolling the streets of Manhattan in the early October air.  Also in this look: The Olympian Brogues, Chic Chevron Tights, Wonderland Headband, and the Braid Brigade Earrings.

Next up – shorts! Now it may seem as though all hope is lost for these summer companions once the the leaves start to fall, but it doesn’t have to be that way! I took the essential vacation outfit – the Skipper Shorts, and the Brain Freeze Tee – and turned it into an art-gallery-hopping look by adding the Moltisanti Blazer and the Sense and Sensibility Boots (and tights for extra warmth) to create a show-stopping rocker-inspired vibe.

Even spring favorites can be layered with summer essentials to create fall-perfect outfits. For this look (above, left), I started with the Hey Mr. Postman Dress. To get the essential autumn layers, I added my new favorite top, the Pastel Pastures Tunic, that features an adorable, but not overwhelming print. Knowing I’d be a bit too chilly at the October gallery crawl with these to pieces alone, I grabbed the Meadowlark Jacket and a pair of nude tights to keep me cozy as I strolled between galleries. I threw in the Walking in Memphis Shoes for an extra girly touch – they’re hard to resist!

I turned The Earhart Romper into a casual look that’s perfect for trips to the pumpkin patch or late-season farmers’ markets. The cozy Feminine Flouce Cardigan belted with the Poetry Prize Belt will warm hearts, even at the first frost, and the Peacock Feather Tights will turn heads any time of the year! Finish it (or any look) off with the Arbor Boots in Cherry, and let the compliments roll in (along with the holiday party invites).

Finally, here are some tips to keep in mind when deciding what to pack up this fall:

1. Sweaters are your friend. Any look can easily be paired with a cardigan or knit top to stay warm while you’re stepping out.

2. Footwear can change the entire vibe of an outfit. A dress may look summer-perfect with strappy wedges, but ready to frolic in the falling leaves when paired with boots.

3. Layers layers layers! Your favorite tee and your best strapless dress may not stand up against the cooler weather, but when layered can be a force to be reckoned with! Mix and match summer staples to create unique and unexpected looks.

4. Sweater knit tights. Need I say more?

5. Knit berets, scarves, and fingerless gloves are fun, adorable, and at your service once the rain turns to snow. They make any look seem more put-together, and it’s an excuse to start a knitting project of your own!

I must admit, my favorite colors tend to be neutrals. Beiges, pastels, soft florals – they all steal my heart. So needless to say, when I came across this look, I fell in love. The silhouette is incredible, the colors are romantic, and the bow adds the perfect finishing touch. I’m not going to lie – I may try to recreate this outfit sometime this weekend.

Choosing style inspirations for color week is so much fun (and so is today’s look)! The primary pops of color added to the belt and the scarf make my heart skip a beat. She really rocks the harem pants, and the neutral shoes and jacket ensure that the look isn’t over-the-top. Her go-anywhere bag (much like our History Girls Bag) completes the casual-chic style.

Hello ModLovers! In the spirit of fashion dictionary, I’ve decided to feature some of the finer details of the garments that we call our wardrobe! This week, we’ll discuss the welt (or besom, by tailors) pocket. The welt pocket is an inset pocket with a lipped finish, and a small, stand-up welt that is typically between 3/8′ and 1 inch wide.

Typically found on suit coats, namely on the breast, our Meadowlark Jacket defies convention by added them to the waist of an adorable little jean number!

We all know that blazers are in-style in a big way this fall – does yours feature a welt pocket?

This week’s style inspirations are in honor of ModCloth Color Week! With winter (thankfully) approaching, I’m turning my attention to cozy looks that don’t skimp on style. Needless to say, I’m smitten with this look. The extra-long, oversized, puffy sleeve sweater in the perfect shade of mustard is every thrifter’s dream, and the candy striped dress can easily be dressed up for high-fashion cocktail hour looks, or added to jeans and boots for a stroll through the park. Greetings fashion fanatics! Its Tuesday, and you know what that means – Fashion Dictionary! This week, Cloche is the word. If you troll as many street style sites as I do, I’m sure you’ve noticed that hats are back! And as the style slave that I am, vintage-inspired hats have taken over my shopping cart.

French for “bell”, a cloche hat is characterized by a deep crown, with a narrow brim or no brim at all, and fits the head closely. It was first made popular in the 1920s and is usually worn with the brim below the eyebrows, almost over the eyes. Our Changeling Hat is a fun, fall-ready way to get the look.
