Attention ModFriends: ModCloth is coming to a city near you!

Starting this week, the ladies of ModCloth will be hiding totes and other ModCloth goodies in cities all over the country (and, someday, all over the world)!  Want to know where and when? 4. Visit a Local Vineyard or Winery. If you’re lucky enough to live near Napa Valley, then this is a no-brainer. However, there are a lot of great wineries all over the country, even in our own Pennsylvania!
5. Visit the Zoo or Aquarium. Last year, I got the chance to explore the Georgia Aquarium, the world’s largest aquarium!
6. Take Pictures. Take advantage of that daylight and take some outfit pics…then post them on our Style Exchange!
7. Lounge in the Pool, like our furry friend in the picture above.
8. Fly a Kite. There have been incredible innovations in the world of kites. Want proof? Check out the Virtual Kite Zoo.
   
9. Catch a matinee at your local theatre. It’s so much cheaper!
   
10. Clean Your Closet and donate what you don’t need to your local Goodwill.

1. Rickrack. We love how this word for zigzag trim sounds and how it looks on dresses like the Cut and Sew Dress!
2. Frog Toggle. The name of this decorative closure makes us smile.
   
3. Seersucker. As Lindsay discussed in her Fashion Dictionary post, we love the name and the look of this textured fabric.
4. Smocking. Sometimes confused with ruching, smocking is often seen on pretty summer dresses like the Outer Banks Mini Dress.
5. Peep Toe. The perfect name for spring footwear!
6. Chambray. We love the feel of this lightweight fabric. If you’re a fan, too, then check out the Atmosphere Dress.
7. Anorak. This snappy term for a heavy jacket makes winter outwear seem like less of a downer.
8. Decollete Neckline is a French term for a plunging neckline. Ooo la la!
9. Peplum. This waistline ruffle is a particularly hot wedding trend right now.
   
10. Applique. A staple for crafty gals and a feature of our Hey Dude Vest.

It’s no secret that the fashion industry is influenced by its surrounding society. Those of us in the Western hemisphere can usually detect style inspirations rooted in our own culture, but fashion trends are also influenced by cultures that aren’t always on our radar. This week, Vasil shows us how certain influences from his region of the world have trickled onto the runways in recent years.

Vasil says, “For the past couple of seasons, Balkan cultures, traditions and folklore have had a large impact on popular designers and fashion houses, such as Chanel, Kenzo, Dior, Galliano, Tao and Gucci. My Eastern European heritage, interest in Balkan folklore, and one of my new favorite blogs, inspired me to do some more research on this topic.  I discovered that similarities among the collections include the use of folk motives, primarily in the jewelry and highly decorative embroidery.”

“Different designers utilize the Balkan inspiration in different ways. Vivienne Westwood translates the Turkish Harem pants into a very classy and casual look. Christian Dior maintains the look and feel of a Turkish traditional costume. John Galliano, inspired by the ornamental and symbolic look of Slavic brides, presents his costume-like creations in a very traditional way. He utilizes silver coins, known as pendari, and large decorative belt buckles, pafti, which are very identifiable in the Bulgarian and Macedonian cultures. In a similar manner, Tao integrates embroidery motives, which hundreds of years ago would have represented various symbols and differentiated groups of people and their customs. The unique look of Chanel’s headpieces is clearly inspired by the rich folklore of Russia. Gucci and Kenzo also brilliantly incorporate the folklore of Russian and the surrounding republics into their collections, which were inspired by the Babushka and Matryoshka.”
