So first of all, a disclaimer: I don’t think Naomi Campbell picked this outfit out! She wore it in a cameo on Ugly Betty while playing softball. But still, I thought it would be a good (bad) example of the wrong way to wear tights with shorts. Wearing tights with shorts can be a great way to transition your summer clothes into fall and early winter. But if you’re someone who falls into the camp of being scared of looking like Naomi in this faux-pas pic, try wearing neutrals so your tights don’t look too flashy and make you feel uncomfortable. I started with the adorable, Zooe- Deschanel-evoking Santorini Shorts, with subtle pleats and cute button details. The high waist is perfect for tucking in a classic top like the Hepburn Blouse. I chose the Dots and Daisies Tights in Brown, because they have a pattern, but don’t overpower the look. And I adore the Edie Wedgewick Shoes, so I had to incorporate them into the look. Wedges will make your legs look long, but are comfy for a day at work or school. Playing off of the green in the shoes, I chose the Charter School Cardigan in British Literature, and matched it with the Stylin’ Stag Ring. To finish off the look, I added the delicate Tempus Fugit Necklace and the Star of the Rodeo Bag.

What is your fashion/styling rule? Any tips for getting your look?
I pick one part of the body to showcase – either legs -(bottom half) or arms -(upper half) unless it’s Summertime, I think it is always best to leave room for some Mystery. Black, grey and navy look good on just about everybody- it’s always key to have some basics in these colors on hand.

Favorite style icon?
I like to call my favorite style Modern Audrey, meaning classic, decadent, veering always on a more feminine side,yet still encompassing some edge and modernity to it all.

Favorite movie?
Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Up.

Is there a specific era that influences your style?
There are so many, but probably the ’50s and ’80s, mostly.

What style blogs do you follow?
I am enamored with so many Photo blogs out there (Little Plastic Horses, Knight Cat, tumblr, Stardust and Sequins). I also hold Street Style blogs close to my heart (Jak & Jil, StockholmStreetStyle, Garance Dore, Streethearts).

What inspired you to start your own blog?
A deep love for wanting to share what I was wearing with the world. I’ve always taken outfit photos of my looks – ever since high school -  but I never really had a proper place to share them on. One day I started to see blogs popping up and decided to give it a whirl!

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
Reading, dancing, shopping, cooking, spending time with my family, traveling…

Any tips for girls wanting to start their own fashion blogs?
Blog often, and about anything and everything you love. The rest will follow… and above all, always make sure to identify what you are wearing. Inquiring minds want to know!

Where oh where do I start? The film, Bright Star, was so moving and beautiful and inspiring that it’s hard to know what to talk about first. Should I touch on the impeccable costumes, the devastating romance, or the amazing cinematography? The film follows the romance between poet John Keats (played by Ben Whishaw, whom I now have a big crush on) and Fannie (Abbie Cornish). Their love is ill-fated from the get-go. Keats is a poor poet who can in no way support a wife financially, but this knowledge doesn’t seem to affect their long, intimate walks through the woods arm-in-arm and their ultimately falling in love.

The film was written and directed by Jane Campion, who also directed The Piano, which won three Oscars. Campion was inspired by Andrew Motion’s biography of Keats, which I would really like to pick up and read now. But I was most intrigued by the character of Fannie, who acted as muse for a romantic poetic that would go down in history as a literary star. The film highlights Fanny’s love for fashion as she sews her own clothes, as though designing dresses were therapy for her love-sick heart. And boy, was I inspired by the clothes! Although it might be hard to find a place in a modern wardrobe for a huge, lacy collar or a stovepipe hat, there are definitely aspects of early 19th century style that are possible to emulate. I’ve picked a few ModCloth pieces that I think fit the bill for channeling Fanny.

If this movie is playing in your area, grab a couple friends and head out to see it. But be warned – it is definitely depressing! Bring tissues and get ready for a drink afterward.

In this photo Carol Alt looks great, except for the fact that she’s not wearing a shirt! I’m not sure what she was thinking – could she have imagined that her bustier constituted a top? The sad thing is that everything else about her outfit is classic and understated. As an homage to Alt’s bra-as-top, I selected the Bow-off Tank for its strategically placed black bow. I paired it with the high-waisted Studio 54 Jeans and the En Trenched With Style Coat. To complete the look, I selected the Style Thesis Bag and the Well Heeled Black Heels.

I’ve been anticipating seeing the French film, Coco Before Chanel, for months now, so I was very excited when my coworker, Aire, told me it was finally coming to a theater in Pittsburgh. If you haven’t heard of the film yet, it follows the life of Coco Chanel before she became well-known – from her humble beginning as an orphan to her rise as a designer. The film was the perfect mix of romance, glamor, and intrigue. I wasn’t even so much concerned with whether the facts were straight (I guess Chanel was known for telling many conflicting stories about her life) as I was with enjoying the rich images of French mansions and lovely dances.

Chanel was played by Audrey Tautou who seemed the perfect fit for the part, with her emotion-filled dark brown eyes and adorable screen presence. She moved across the set ripping corsets out of dresses and removing feathers from hats, and we were able to see the transformation of her style as the film progressed.

I was really inspired by the costuming in the film, especially in some of the later scenes where her outfits more reflected the aesthetic we know and love as Chanel. Scenes where she strutted around in menswear made me want to wear a tuxedo shirt. In fact, every shot inspired me! So for this post I’ve picked a few items that reminded me of those Audrey wore in the film.

When you choose to wear a rainbow colored dress like Beth Ditto, you’re making a statement no matter what. But the more pronounced the colors, the more of a statement you’re making. To avoid standing out in a bad way, I’d suggest wearing a dress that incorporates the colors in smaller stripes and breaks up the ROY G BIV order of the colors. Going by those guidelines, the Loft Party Dress was the perfect fix to this faux-pas. I paired it with the basic, black suede Midnight Rider Carryall and My So Called Heels to keep the dress from looking clownish, and then accessorized with the Syracuse Cardigan in Westcott and the Dahlia Headband. I love her hair and makeup – no changes there!

What would you have accessorized the loft party dress with? What are your thoughts on lots of color?

I love how understated this outfit is. Nothing about it is flashy and yet this girl still stands out. Everything in her outfit looks like pieces I could pull out of my mom’s closet (she never gets rid of anything), and that’s a compliment. I love the brown quilted leather purse and classic oxfords. Plus, lately I’ve been getting really excited about contrasting prints. I think the plaid trousers and paisley scarf work amazingly together. This photo also revives my desire to have worse vision. I might have to bite the bullet and wear non-prescription glasses. No one will know – except all of you…

I found out about Karen’s blog, Where Did U Get That when I noticed she was wearing our vest (pictured above) in a photo on an online gallery of bloggers. I thought: Why haven’t I discovered this blog yet?! I love how edgy all of Karen’s looks are – the way she pairs ladylike silhouettes with leather and fringe. She wears the highest heels imaginable and thigh-high boots so effortlessly that you almost don’t notice how daring some of her looks are. And her outfit photos are always amazing!

You’re originally from England, but now call New York City home. Has moving to NYC changed your style at all? If so, how?
I don’t think it has really. I still shop at thrift and vintage shops like I used to in London and still mix those items in with high street and random boutiques. The only change, if anything, is I’ve added in some higher-end shoe brands that I had not ever done before in London.

What is your fashion/styling rule? Any tips for getting your look?
I don’t have any rules per se except to maybe always keep it casual. Even if I’m dressing up for a night out, there has to be something a bit undone or edgy before I walk out the door. Tips? Shop vintage and thrift especially for jewelery and Fryes. Mix up fabrics in the same color ie. today I happen to be wearing black sequins with a sheer black T and black scarf and old black leather boots.

Favorite style icon?
I love Zoe Kravitz for her effortless throw-on anything on look–much of it being vintage.

Favorite movie?
Style wise, I LOVE Almost Famous with Kate Hudson. She looked amazing and her outfits were BEYOND sick. I also LOVE the styling of Patricia Arquette from the movie True Romance. So girly-punk with loads of color. Funnily enough, she wears a faux-fur leopard coat that I happened to have just bought recently.

Is there a specific era that inspires your style?
I love the look of the 70s–a la Charlies Angels. The tight jeans with flared out bottoms, the flowy hair. The whole thing just looks KILLER and very sexy and has been updated and made more relevant today by a lot of denim brands (LOVE my flares by 18th Amendment). I also love the mod 60s Twiggy look. So ground breaking at the time with the straight clean lines and heavy eyeliner.

What style blogs do you follow?
I read about 15 a day, give or take, but always gravitate to certain sites which include: KnightCat, Carolines Mode, Refinery 29.

What inspired you to start your own blog?
Two things: 1. I wanted an outlet to express my passion about clothing and fashion. 2. I used to follow loads of bloggers for a couple of years and thought to myself  ‘why am I not doing this?’ It looks so me.

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
Honestly I love shopping and finding new boutiques.

Any tips for girls wanting to start their own fashion blogs?
If you love fashion, styling, clothes etc, then that in itself will be your driving motivator to want to get it going.  You don’t need someone to take your pics either. Many use a remote control that works great. Be prepared to devote a lot of time to blogging. It takes up a surprising amount of time, but just go for it!! What do you have to lose?

I LOVE this edgy schoolgirl look! The contrast between the thigh-high socks and the leather jacket is just perfect and the pop of pink skirt is brilliant. I’ve been coveting blogger Delightfully Tacky’s style for months so when I got the opportunity to do Style Inspirations this week, I knew I wanted to choose one of her looks. She’s an Alaska girl, and having moved to Pittsburgh from Alaska myself a few years ago, I was excited to stumble upon her blog. People think Alaska is lacking in the fashion department, and yeah you do see a lot of polar fleece and parkas, but there are enclaves of fashionistas; you just have to know where to look! But back to the outfit at hand – I loved the simple black and white color palette of this ensemble, and how it plays with texture and shape. Her hair is almost an accessory in itself, and it goes great with her DIY furry skirt, a la Where the Wild Things Are, and fringed moccasins. The woodsy setting completes the look.
