When I was at New York Fashion Week, I had the opportunity to grab coffee with our latest Blogger of the Moment, Liz of Late Afternoon, a true California-girl fashionista . I already knew from her blog that she had impeccable style, dreaming up clothing combos that I’d never think of but that looked amazing. Think piling on two watches and a handful of bracelets or pairing two different leopard prints — outfits that sound crazy when described but end up looking effortless when worn. She truly has a unique vision when it comes to personal style.But fashion isn’t the only thing Liz lives for. She got her undergrad degree in psychology and thought she might pursue a career in research, but her natural eye for all things fashion has led her down a different path. What is your fashion/styling rule? Any tips for getting your look?
Never underestimate the power of accessories, and never leave the house feeling anything less than confident. To get my look, mix edgy pieces with feminine touches and always layer on the rings.

I am inspired by so many people! But basically any woman who is intelligent, ambitious, stylish and kind.

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
I love to cook, explore the city, check out art openings, thrift/vintage shop, and find new places to eat.

Any tips for girls wanting to start their own fashion blogs?
Find your voice and don’t get discouraged.

What is your ultimate dream for the future?
To have a job that is both creative and secure, start a family with my other half (my boyfriend), live in an old Victorian house where I can have all the pets I want, and to have the freedom to travel around the world.

If someone said you could travel anywhere in the universe, where would that be?
Is a parallel universe a choice? According to string theory, there’s a possibility those exist.

And last but not least – if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and what would you eat?
I would eat with Albert Camus and we would feast on foie gras, escargot and duck confit.

What is your fashion/styling rule? Any tips for getting your look?
“Quality” and “Fit” would be my styling “rules,” if I have any. Fabric is one of the most important aspects of a garment, if it doesn’t hang properly it will make a person’s figure seem flawed when it probably isn’t. The same could be said about fit, especially for a woman. Seamlines and silhouettes should hit at flattering points or it distorts the figure completely… such as the waistline being too low, casing the lower section of your body to appear short.

Favorite style icon?
That’s so hard… I am inspired by so many modern and old Hollywood actresses, along with fashion bloggers. I suppose Katy Perry or Zooey Deschanel? Kind-of cliche, but I love their mix vintage and modern.

Favorite movie or book?
I love romances and end of the world movies! Oh, and 80s flicks, like Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. I also just went to see Avatar, and fell in love.

What style blogs do you follow?
I try to follow all of them! I really love feeling inspired every day, by different individuals with different styles.

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
I work part-time at a vintage store, but when I’m not there I’m always spending time with my wonderful husband and 2 1/2 year old son. I also love to paint and write… Art is a big part my family’s life.

Any tips for girls wanting to start their own fashion blogs?
Just jump in there and be patient! It’s a big step for all of us to start a fashion blog… you want it to be perfect and to get a million followers in one day, but it just doesn’t happen like that. Do your best, try your hardest and just have faith that after a while you’ll get the attention you deserve. Also, get your name out there by swapping links with any other fashion blogger you can, leave comments and join all of the fashion sites… and it’ll happen.

How do you find all of your amazing vintage pieces? What’s your thrifting M.O.?
Thrifting CONSTANTLY. I go to the thrift stores in my area at least twice a week, and I shop online throughout the week. It’s the best way to get good deals, by hanging out at the “sources” enough to catch them early.

If someone said you could travel anywhere in the universe, where would that be?
Oh… toughie. If not Japan (I’ve been there, but I’d live there if I could), definitely Heaven. Seriously, could there be a better place to visit?

And last but not least – if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and what would you eat?
If not my living family, my grandfather. He’s the only person’s death that I’ve known and witnessed. I miss him, and I regret not getting closer to him during the time he was with us… I wish I could have a sweet moment with him again.

Yes! Launch my online clothing store and dispose of items I don’t wear too much!

Africa, France, Japan, Central America. I’d also love to visit Haiti…to see it all for myself.

What is your fashion/styling rule? Any tips for getting your look?
It’s simpler than you might think – my rule is to only buy pieces that I absolutely feverishly love! And then, every couple months, get rid of the ones I am no longer maddeningly passionate about. That way, every time I go into my closet, I know it will be stocked with exactly what I want to wear.

How has your style evolved over the years? Have you always be interested in fashion?
Growing up, I wore uniforms to school, and was much more interested in art and interior design than in fashion. I could recite the names of china patterns long before I’d heard of a single fashion house! But somewhere along the way ~ it must have been in high school ~ I realized that I could communicate my passion for craftsmanship and design with how I dressed myself. Since then I’ve been completely addicted to having pretty things on and around me at all times!

You’re an amazing designer – where do you find inspiration for your jewelery and apparel?
Thank you! It’s hard to isolate the inception of inspiration; it’s something you constantly absorb. I’ve consciously chosen to pursue a lovely life – to eat great food, to watch beautiful movies, to enjoy my friends, and to feel glamorous at some moment, every single day. Then I design things that I believe can give that experience to other women around the world.

Favorite style icon?
Blogs and books are both wonderful drugs. I love looking at stylish women; there’s something to learn from every one! My favorites are Iris Apfel, Loulou de la Falaise, and Catherine Baba – bold broads that aren’t afraid to wear everything they adore, sometimes all at once. These three share not only a cool confidence that they can get away with whatever, but also a strong sense of texture and proportion that keeps it chic. That combination of courage and control is incredibly aspirational to me.

Favorite movie or book?
For a while now, I’ve been working my way through ‘The Modern Library’ literature collection. I especially enjoy mysteries, like The Moonstone. In film, I’m delighted by anything from Fassbinder or John Waters, and stylish documentaries like Grey Gardens and The Cockettes.

What style blogs do you follow?
I quite like Luxirare, Beckerman Bite Plate, Sea of Shoes, The Cherry Blossom Girl, Garance Dore… and too many others to name!

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
The lines between my life and my work are pretty blurred, for which I consider myself very fortunate. My hobbies are my job! I love styling, reworking clothes, making jewelry, and taking photos. Voila, that’s my blog! Otherwise, I just love to roll around the house, playing with my dog. She’s better than television!

Any tips for girls wanting to start their own fashion blogs?
Give people something yummy to look at! It’s all about the eye candy for me. I want to go on a visual trip, and like visiting blogs that post big, saturated, beautiful photographs. When I want to read, I open a book. If a blog has tons of text and teeny tiny pictures, I likely won’t visit it twice.

And last but not least – if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and what would you eat?
I’ve had the good luck to get to meet many of my idols, and to eat at the best restaurants. But there’s nothing and no one in the world who can compete with having red beans and rice with my family in Austin!

What is your fashion/styling rule? Any tips for getting your look?
I wish I had one! It would make getting dressed in the morning so much easier and free of a pile of discarded items on my bed. As far as what I try to stick to though, I’ve found that you’re never going to absolutely love every outfit you end up wearing for the day. You’re just not. As long as you can accept that, you’ll save yourself from a lot of stress and pressure. I have plenty of posts on my blog that after looking through them, I cringe at what I had pulled together for the day. The point is to try things out. I can’t count how many times I’ve had someone tell me, “Oh, I could never pull that off, but it looks great on you.” That isn’t true. Almost 90 percent of putting together a great outfit is confidence. If you feel great in it, wear it. And own it. If it doesn’t work out, no big deal. Try something else. Much like the Tooth Fairy, there is no such thing as the fashion police.  And honestly, for my look, I’m not even quite sure how I pull it off most of the time. If someone could tell me, that would be great!

You do a great job of looking like a million bucks without wearing lots of expensive designer clothes. What’s your shopping M.O.?
I used to try to stretch my paychecks as much as I could. I would buy as many clothing items as possible with the allotted part of my budget. Don’t do that. Buy only things that you love, have an instant connection with and most importantly, will last you. That still doesn’t mean you have to buy only expensive, hard-to-find items. It’s more about looking at your closet and realizing what could really add something to it as opposed to what you could buy, right now, just for the sake of adding to it.

Favorite style icon?
That’s a tough one to narrow down. I really admire a handful of people, sometimes as random as a person I see walking down the street. I’d have to say my top faves (in no particular order) are Alexa Chung, Chan Marshall, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Natalie Portman (mainly the way she carries herself, her poise is amazing), Chloe Sevigny, Kate Moss, Zooey Deschanel and of course, Lady Gaga for her fearlessness.

Favorite movie or book?
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. I wish I could live in that book. And be Dominique Francon and fall in love with Howard Roark.

What style blogs do you follow?
Another tough one! My morning routine usually involves a piece of toast and plopping myself in front of the computer to see what everyone else is wearing for the day. I love daily style blogs like What I Wore (Jessica’s such a sweetheart in real life, another reason why I love her blog!), Kansas Couture (I’ve also met Katy before, another sweetheart!) and Orchid Grey (hi Julie!). Other favorites include Adored Austin, Late Afternoon, We Were Damsels, Delightfully Tacky, Karla’s Closet, Song of Style, My Style Pill, and Second Skin.

What inspired you to start your own blog?
The funny thing is, is that I never really intended for this blog to be read by anyone besides my mother. I literally was graduating from college this past May and knowing that both of my two jobs would be ending soon after, I decided I needed something to keep me busy. Keep me writing. And keep me from online shopping too much. I was already familiar with fashion communities like Weardrobe and Chictopia, so I wanted in. It’s helped me feel more inspired about my closet and actually pushes me to feel (and look) my best every day.

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
I wish I had a long list of interesting and unique things to say about myself, but it’s pretty simple. I like running, I love to read, I love spending time with friends, I love to write and plan to someday work for a major fashion magazine, I love to travel and love to find really good songs and play them again and again and again.

Any tips for girls wanting to start their own fashion blogs?
Go for it. What do you have to lose? Figure out your style and stick with it. Dress for yourself and no one else.

Nubby Twiglet doesn’t simply have a fashion blog – her site combines style, design, and art to produce a seamless aesthetic that is oh-so Nubby. What is your fashion/styling rule? Any tips for getting your look?
No matter how basic my outfit is, I always finish it off with a great purse and killer shoes. Starting off with basic clothing staples like a black t-shirt, skinny jeans or leggings and building off of that makes getting dressed so much easier. My style has two varying extremes. On any given day, I am either dressing like a female version of Michael Jackson with military-inspired jackets, tight black pants and black boots or doing a total Lolita-inspired schoolgirl look complete with vintage dresses and a big bow in my hair. I always invest more in the basics: a good jacket, watch, pair of shoes and a bag. These are the items that you are bound to use hundreds of times, so quality is more important.

You’re known for wearing black and white. When did you first start sticking to the basics?
My clothing tends to reflect my design and decor style which is very stark, minimal, and space age. I used to wear a lot of red, but after 10+ years, I switched it up and started adding in more gray tones. I do have quite a bit of green and a few blue and purple pieces but for my everyday attire, I stick with simple, monochromatic looks since I am usually running to appointments and meetings with clients.

Favorite style icon?
Michael Jackson. I love rocking sequins, military-inspired looks, and anything bordering on androgynous. I also love Andy Warhol, Twiggy, David Bowie and Bjork.

Favorite movie?
I’ve always loved Gone With The Wind and Donnie Darko. Honestly, I don’t watch movies very much. But, I’ve promised to change this for good in the new year!

What style blogs do you follow?
My favorites are: Sea of Shoes, Gala Darling, Jazzi McG, Fashion is Poison, Bleed For Fashion, Destroyx, Queen Gilda, Childhood Flames

What inspired you to start your own blog?
I’ve always loved taking photos, writing, and sharing my design projects. I started blogging back in 2001 and by 2007, many of my friends were running popular blogs on their own platforms. In August 2007, I decided that it was time to take the leap. Since then, I’ve managed to post an average of five days a week and have no plans of slowing down!

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
I love designing, catching up on blogs, shopping, and meeting up with friends at various Portland hotspots.

Any tips for girls wanting to start their own fashion blogs?
Develop your own sense of style. It’s okay to take cues from other sources, but always make it your own. Be relentless – blogging is hard work and takes a lot of practice and patience. Find your voice. It doesn’t matter that there are millions of other blogs out there – if you are truly passionate and good at what you do, you will rise to the top. Try to maintain some consistency with your schedule so that readers know when to check back for updates. If you can, try to develop some regular columns that go live on certain weekdays so that readers have an idea of what to expect.

And last but not least – if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and what would you eat?
Definitely Michael Jackson. I know that he loved KFC, but I don’t eat meat so maybe we could share an ice cream sundae.

What is your fashion/styling rule? Any tips for getting your look?
I think I tend to mix a lot of decades when getting dressed.  It seems that’s the best way to wear vintage and not come across as costumey.  If I’m wearing a 30s dress I’ll pair it with 70s boots or pair a 60s skirt with 30s oxfords.  I also never feel comfortable wearing all new clothes from head to toe.  If I have on new shoes, I’ll surely pair them with a vintage dress and vice versa.

Favorite style icon?
Wow, that’s hard to narrow down.  I’d say the one I come back to again and again is Faye Dunaway in Bonnie & Clyde.  I love the 60s interpretation of the 30s style in that movie.  You get all the wonderful art deco details in the clothes paired with the 60s hair and make-up.

Favorite movie?
I tend to watch a a lot of TCM and Retro channel movies.  Lately I’ve been trying to make my way through the pre-code movie collection.  I especially loved Baby Face with Barbara Stanwyck.  I also have modern favorites:  Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Royal Tenenbaums come to mind.

How do you find so many great locations for your photo shoots?
My boyfriend and I are always on the lookout for abandoned places to explore.  It’s been one of our favorite pastimes for years.  When we were living in Alabama we discovered an entire neighborhood that was abandoned after a polluted stream overflowed and flooded the houses.  We published a book about the area called Ruins of the Dirty South.  We’ve been sort of addicted to finding new places to explore ever since.

What style blogs do you follow?
I’m constantly amazed at the number of style blogs out there.  It seems I discover a new great one every day.  Some favorites I’ve been following for ages are Clever Nettle, The Snail and The Cyclops and Ringo Have a Banana.  Some newer favorites are Lulu Letty, Dear Golden Vintage and 13bees.

What inspired you to start your own blog?
I started my blog when I began selling online as a way to share my vintage finds and spread the word about my new shop.  Little did I know that the blog would take on a life of its own.  I was so happy to discover a whole community of people that love vintage as much as I do.

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
I also love photography, thrifting (of course!), cooking, watching the History Channel and playing with my cats.

Any tips for girls wanting to start their own fashion blogs?
It sounds corny, but make sure you’re writing about something you love.  Blogging can quickly become a chore if you’re not writing about something you enjoy.

And last but not least – if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and what would you eat?
I would surround myself with family and friends for a giant vegetarian feast!

What is your fashion/styling rule? Any tips for getting your look?
I pick one part of the body to showcase – either legs -(bottom half) or arms -(upper half) unless it’s Summertime, I think it is always best to leave room for some Mystery. Black, grey and navy look good on just about everybody- it’s always key to have some basics in these colors on hand.

I like to call my favorite style Modern Audrey, meaning classic, decadent, veering always on a more feminine side,yet still encompassing some edge and modernity to it all.

There are so many, but probably the ’50s and ’80s, mostly.

A deep love for wanting to share what I was wearing with the world. I’ve always taken outfit photos of my looks – ever since high school -  but I never really had a proper place to share them on. One day I started to see blogs popping up and decided to give it a whirl!

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
Reading, dancing, shopping, cooking, spending time with my family, traveling…

Any tips for girls wanting to start their own fashion blogs?
Blog often, and about anything and everything you love. The rest will follow… and above all, always make sure to identify what you are wearing. Inquiring minds want to know!

And last but not least – if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
Julian Casablancas from The Strokes. I want to know how he comes up with his intense lyrics and sweltering beats.

I found out about Karen’s blog, Where Did U Get That when I noticed she was wearing our vest (pictured above) in a photo on an online gallery of bloggers. I thought: Why haven’t I discovered this blog yet?! I love how edgy all of Karen’s looks are – the way she pairs ladylike silhouettes with leather and fringe. She wears the highest heels imaginable and thigh-high boots so effortlessly that you almost don’t notice how daring some of her looks are. And her outfit photos are always amazing!

Read on to hear a little bit about what inspires her style, see some of her favorite ModCloth items, and get first dibs on her namesake dress.

You’re originally from England, but now call New York City home. Has moving to NYC changed your style at all? If so, how?
I don’t think it has really. I still shop at thrift and vintage shops like I used to in London and still mix those items in with high street and random boutiques. The only change, if anything, is I’ve added in some higher-end shoe brands that I had not ever done before in London.

What is your fashion/styling rule? Any tips for getting your look?
I don’t have any rules per se except to maybe always keep it casual. Even if I’m dressing up for a night out, there has to be something a bit undone or edgy before I walk out the door. Tips? Shop vintage and thrift especially for jewelery and Fryes. Mix up fabrics in the same color ie. today I happen to be wearing black sequins with a sheer black T and black scarf and old black leather boots.

Favorite style icon?
I love Zoe Kravitz for her effortless throw-on anything on look–much of it being vintage.

Favorite movie?
Style wise, I LOVE Almost Famous with Kate Hudson. She looked amazing and her outfits were BEYOND sick. I also LOVE the styling of Patricia Arquette from the movie True Romance. So girly-punk with loads of color. Funnily enough, she wears a faux-fur leopard coat that I happened to have just bought recently.

Is there a specific era that inspires your style?
I love the look of the 70s–a la Charlies Angels. The tight jeans with flared out bottoms, the flowy hair. The whole thing just looks KILLER and very sexy and has been updated and made more relevant today by a lot of denim brands (LOVE my flares by 18th Amendment). I also love the mod 60s Twiggy look. So ground breaking at the time with the straight clean lines and heavy eyeliner.

What style blogs do you follow?
I read about 15 a day, give or take, but always gravitate to certain sites which include: KnightCat, Carolines Mode, Refinery 29.

What inspired you to start your own blog?
Two things: 1. I wanted an outlet to express my passion about clothing and fashion. 2. I used to follow loads of bloggers for a couple of years and thought to myself  ‘why am I not doing this?’ It looks so me.

When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
Honestly I love shopping and finding new boutiques.

Any tips for girls wanting to start their own fashion blogs?
If you love fashion, styling, clothes etc, then that in itself will be your driving motivator to want to get it going.  You don’t need someone to take your pics either. Many use a remote control that works great. Be prepared to devote a lot of time to blogging. It takes up a surprising amount of time, but just go for it!! What do you have to lose?
