When you choose to wear a rainbow colored dress like Beth Ditto, you’re making a statement no matter what. But the more pronounced the colors, the more of a statement you’re making. To avoid standing out in a bad way, I’d suggest wearing a dress that incorporates the colors in smaller stripes and breaks up the ROY G BIV order of the colors. Going by those guidelines, the Loft Party Dress was the perfect fix to this faux-pas. I paired it with the basic, black suede Midnight Rider Carryall and My So Called Heels to keep the dress from looking clownish, and then accessorized with the Syracuse Cardigan in Westcott and the Dahlia Headband. I love her hair and makeup – no changes there!
What would you have accessorized the loft party dress with? What are your thoughts on lots of color?

Most people can’t get away with wearing a sheer lace top, not even Kelly Clarkson for the stage. Instead, why not wear a lace top with a built-in lining, like the Net Worth Tank? And instead of sloppy pants, I dressed Kelly in the Zelda Skirt, which is totally pop-star worthy, with it’s amazing, built-in waistband detail. Much sleeker than Kelly’s slouchy pants! The cute Love Don’t Cost a Thing Booties add a bit of edge and aren’t too girly . I just adore the Party Snacks Necklace in Pretzel so I couldn’t help but add it as an accessory. Isn’t it totally random and awesome? I want it! And obviously Kelly won’t be using a purse on stage, but The Chesire Clutch is perfect for holding all the essentials off-stage. You’re probably asking why I didn’t accessorize with a glove, or gloves, like Kelly. Well, I think fingerless leather gloves are just too obvious an accoutrement for the stage. Had to go with the pretzel necklace instead. Sorry!
Do you think anything goes on the stage? What do you think Kelly Clarkson should wear?

In this outfit Bai Ling looks like she’s dressed up in a costume, but I think this is just really how she dresses – in a swimsuit-like thing with hip protectors (?) and thigh-high boots. Even though her getup is kinda crazy, I love the simplicity of the black and white. In the revamped outfit, I went for the short and girly Dancing Queen Dress in Pop, so she can still show off her legs, but doesn’t look like she’s getting ready to hit the beach. And rather than the garish patent leather boots, I went for the feminine patent leather Red Hot Heels for a pop of color. Playing off of the red of the shoes, I selected The Cadillac Bag which adds a bit of gold to the look. The finishing touches – the Floutingly Formal Necklace and the Grey Box Earrings.
How would you restyle Bai Ling’s look?

Oh, you knew the day would come when I would choose Lady Gaga for a faux-pas. Of course, dressing uniquely is her whole shtick, so she can really get away with it because she does it every day. Right? Anyway, the first rule of wearing a jacket? Don’t forget to dress the rest of your body! When revamping this outfit, I chose to focus on the only real article of clothing she’s wearing – her white jacket. You guys already know that these days it’s okay to wear white after Labor Day, but you still see it banished from a lot of people’s wardrobes. The trick is pairing it with warm, earthy fall colors. I started with the relaxed Buena Vista Social Jacket and built off of that, adding the Into the Groove Skirt and The Grey-t Lace Cami. Playing off the colors in the skirt, I paired the outfit with the Hi-Fi Heels and the Perfect Palate Bag. The finishing touches? The Bronze Age Bangle and the Mata Hari Necklace.
What do you think? Would you ever channel Lady Gaga and wear an outfit inspired by her? (I’m not talking Halloween either!)

In this photo Leigh Lezark looks like she joined the circus and not in a good way. Maybe she just did a back flip and is doing that pose that gymnasts do when they’re done with their routine? I do like the idea of stark, contrasting black and grey with her sleek black bob, but maybe not in the form of a spandex jumpsuit. Instead, I’d dress her in the Zebra-flection Tee and the Black Spinel Skirt paired with the Fiddle Boots, the Desperately Seeking Fringe Purse and The Teela Bangle. The new outfit still has the color contrast going on, but it also plays with texture, and gold and silver.
How would you have reworked Leigh Lezark’s outfit?

I hesitated to feature famous fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker in my faux-pas post – I didn’t want to offend, and I love her as much as the next girl. But, sometimes being a trendsetter means being a risk-taker, and that’s just what SJP was when she decided to don a big, blue, scrunchy around her torso like a beauty-pageant sash gone wrong. I tried to put together a feminine ensemble that’s a little more approachable than the puffy outfit SJP is wearing. I started with the figure-flattering Raspberry Twist Cocktail Dress and paired it with the Vegas Odds Heels. The shoes are white like hers, but are warmed up with a touch of gold. As an alternative to the teal flounce (I don’t know what else to call that thing), I opted for the Acoustic Night Cardigan as a sort of homage to SJP’s rosette-wearing days. I thought the ultra-girly Sainte Marie Bag would be the perfect accompaniment to the rest of the pieces, and I finished off the look with the delicate Labyrinth Bracelet and The Alicia Locket.
What do you think – is any outfit forgivable when worn by super-star Sarah Jessica Parker?

I didn’t even know where to start when it came to drawing inspiration from this terrible outfit. I decided to focus on the most feminine aspect of her attire – her black lace bustier. As an alternative, I chose the Kiss and Tell Dress for its structured lace bodice and its black-and-white patterned skirt. Already this is a much better start than the lace and camo combo that Jeane Fournier is sporting. My first instinct was to go with a bright red purse like her, but instead I selected the richer-hued Out of Africa Bag. The sleek My So Called Heels and delicate Holly Bowlightly Necklace finish off the ensemble. (No strangling halter allowed in this remixed outfit!)
What do you think? Is there ever a situation when camo and lace actually look good together? Can camo ever work on the red carpet?

Well, we all know it was a faux-pas for Kanye West to interrupt Taylor Swift at the VMA awards, but this post is about his girlfriend’s faux-pas outfit. The VMAs are known for featuring more-daring-than-average outfits, but does this snakeskin bodysuit work even for the VMAs? What do you think? You might remember my first faux-pas post, which featured a photo of Sacha Baron Cohen decked out in leopard print as his character, Bruno. I think Amber Rose’s VMA outfit resembles Bruno’s ensemble, with its allover animal print and second-skin look.
But if you like animal print, why not try the slightly more understated (I know, I sound like a broken record) Jazz Singer Dress in Billie with the oh-so-subtle black snakeskin Baccarat Heels and the The Lita Clutch in Fender. And because Amber Rose seems to be all in love with Kanye, I selected the Love Letter Earrings and the Coup de Coeur Watch Ring. I do like her statement necklace, but I thought it would be fun for her to wear the Limited Pressing LP Necklace because she is at the VMAs after all.
What do you think, does anything go if you’re at the VMAs?

Oh man, Rumer Willis has definitely started some unintentional rumors about her fashion sense with this odd dress(?) concoction. I can’t really think of any circumstance that would be appropriate for wearing a dress that doesn’t even cover the bathing suit area…However, I like the burgundy color, and the strapless silhouette, so I chose the the Hopscotch Dress as an alternative. I kept the height of the heels, but warmed it up a bit with the Miami Date Wedges and added the over-sized Digital Clutch. To tie it all together – I finished off the look with the Gift Wrap Necklace.
What do you think – is there any occasion when Rumer’s dress could be suitable? What ModCloth items do you think she should wear?

Wow, where to begin…? If you like turquoise, it doesn’t mean you need to deck yourself out completely in that color, especially not if you’re wearing a short-short dress and knee-high furry leg warmers. (Or are those boots? What are those?!) Instead, how ’bout wearing just one piece in your favorite color. The Tattle Teal Dress is the perfect choice for a few reasons – it’s a great length, the color is a bit more understated (but still a statement), and it’s 100% cotton. I’d pair it with neutral accessories like the Cafe Flats in Noisette, the Tran-quill-ity Hoops and the Heart on Your Sleeve Bangles. For an added touch of flair, finish off the ensemble with the Tahitian Sun Kisslock, which ties in the teal, but isn’t monochromatic.
What do you think about Traci Bingham’s outfit? Does her confidence allow her to get away with it, or do you like the reworked outfit better?
