It’s not often we write about men. But in the spirit of the ever-popular end-of-year list, we just had to compile our own quirky and quite extensive (seems we have no problem writing about this particular topic) list of our favorite gentlemen from 2008. People Magazine may have dubbed Hugh Jackman the Sexiest Man Alive, but we’re partial to our own less-traditional superlatives. So, without further ado, we tip our hats and open our hearts to the 2008 ModMen of the Year!!

Hometown Heroes

Don’t let our size fool you – Pittsburgh is a hotbed of interesting and talented men. Here is our short list of the local guys that entertain and inspire us.

Gregg Gillis, better known as mashup sensation Girl Talk, shows millions of fans that Pittsburgh loves a good dance party. He now sells out venues across the world, but we remember being one of a handful of attendees at his early events at Garfield Artworks.

Our wonderful warehouse manager Joseph was an obvious choice for our ModMen list. He orchestrates the pulling, packing, and shipping of hundreds of orders per day, keeping ModGirls around the world on trend and stylish. We love you Joseph!

Terrance Hayes: Since his first collection, Muscular Music, was published in 1999, award-winning poet Terrance Hayes has gained a national reputation for his striking work. Though he was born in South Carolina, Hayes currently resides in Pittsburgh as a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. Lucky us!

There’s something about a guy with a guitar (or two). This duo from New Zealand are the quintessential lovable losers. Easy on the eyes and ears, we couldn’t complete the list without Bret and Jemaine.

Infamous Men of Infomercials

We’ve spent many a late night debating picking up the phone to order fruits of these ModMen’s labors.  Their gimmicks and miracle products have earned them their rightful spots in this year’s list.

Matthew Lesko: There’s something about a guy who wants us to cash in. Smart and excitable, Matthew Lesko lets us in on secrets the government doesn’t want us to know about. And that suit!

Hot Doc We Wish Was Covered by UPMC 

Who knew learning about medical conditions like sarcoidosis could be so sexy? We’re willing to tolerate Dr. Gregory House’s bad attitude … in fact, we kind of like it!

Guilty Pleasures

OK, so we all have crushes that we might be a little too embarrassed to admit to in mixed company. From one extreme to the other, here are two of our guilty pleasures:

Better With an Accent

Although we love the irresistible James McAvoy any way we can get him, we must admit we prefer him with his natural Scottish accent or even British and Irish. Maybe it’s the familiarity, but his American accent in movies like Penelope and Wanted leaves something to be desired. And really, no one looks better in early 19th century costume.
