This winter, ModCloth’s got your back! Just as the chilly weather starts creeping its way into your hometown, we’re introducing our ingenious, new Winter Coat Rating. We believe that you deserve to know exactly what you’re getting when you order from us, and that includes the intricacies of each coat’s coziness! Plus, just because the temperature is dropping, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your style! In order to decipher what outerwear best suits your climate and style needs, our fabulous ModTeam developed an elaborate equation that measures every aspect of a jacket’s potential warmth, taking into account its material, lining, sleeve and body length. The result of their painstaking work is your benefit!

To take advantage of our new Winter Coat Ratings, just click on any coat’s Composition and Measurement information to find out where your potential garment lands on the snug spectrum. A coat with a rating of 1 indicates lightweight outerwear suitable for milder climates, while a jacket with a rating of 5 is a heavyweight champion! So, if you’re a snow bunny in Aspen who doesn’t want the winter chill to interrupt her ski runs, The Adorable Snow Coat (Rating: 5) might just be right for you. For our budding political pundit in Washington, D.C., our Ruffle Around the Edges Coat (Rating: 3) could help ward off the chilly breeze blowing in off the tidal basin. Women around the country are jealous of the stylish Southwestern gal who gets to pull off the fabulous En Vogue Jacket (Rating: 1) late into the winter months. But no matter your location or the season, ModCloth has your outwear needs covered!

What coats do you plan on investing in this winter?

Have you ever dreamed of having your own personal stylist at your beck and call? In a few weeks, ModCloth will be debuting its new team of virtual stylists to assist you in all your fashion quandaries. And this debut comes just in time for the holidays, so they can also assist you with all of your holiday shopping!

But first this perfectly-outfitted outfit needs a name! Since you, readers, always seem to know best, we decided to enlist your help to dub these dames! Take a look at the poll to the left and pick the name that you think would be perfect for the team. Voting will run this afternoon through Friday at 6:00 p.m. e.s.t. and the girls and their new name will be featured in a newsletter and blog post in the next few weeks.

We know you’ve still got your voting face on from Election Day yesterday, so carry on that democratic spirit, and cast your vote!

Creative Director Joe, Videographer Eric, Susan (the star), and Social Networking Peep Natasha gather ’round to see their footage.

Something exciting is happening today! We’re launching a video series exclusively on our facebook fan page. This series features Susan answering questions that our  friends have posted on our page.

Here’s what Natasha  (above right) had to say about the inspiration for these vids: “Our amazing facebook fan page community was the inspiration for this video series. The fan page has become a platform to not just to talk about ModCloth, but also pose styling questions and share fashion advice. We love the spirit of our fan page community!”

As the weather in Pittsburgh changes from humid to “Where’s the heater?”, our wardrobe preferences also shift towards those of the warm and fuzzy variety. Our latest “Fashion Forecast” photo shoot fell seamlessly in line with the temperature transition, thanks to the set’s tactile props, which were just begging to be snuggled, and the infinitely fabulous array of ensembles that are sure to warm your stylish heart…

At ModCloth, we’re big believers in fashion democratization, and we think everyone should get a chance to participate in the fashion industry! That’s why we’re launching Be the Buyer, a new feature that allows you to act as a virtual fashion buyer on the ModCloth team. What does this mean for you? You’ll get the opportunity to let us know which items you love enough for us to have them produced and then sold on ModCloth! Vote for the items that you want ModCloth to carry by clicking ‘Pick It.’ Your vote means that you feel strongly about bringing this dress into the fashion world, so please ‘Pick It’ with care! If enough people choose the item, that piece will be made with love and sold on ModCloth within just a few weeks. And don’t worry, if you clicked ‘Pick It,’ you’ll receive email notification as soon as that piece is available for purchase, thanks to your vote!

You see, sometimes there are designs that we absolutely adore, but the designer can only put them into production if they make a large quantity. As a small company, it’s difficult for us to make these big inventory commitments without knowing if you will love the designs as much as we do. It’s a little like mind reading. That’s why we’re asking you, the customer, to be a virtual buyer, and tell us which items you love! This might mean a little bit more waiting for your unique design, but it’s worth the wait to take part in the buying process, and support designs you love.

We hope you are as excited about Be the Buyer as we are! We can’t wait to see what you love, and what new designs get produced. So click here to start voting now!

How do you plan on Franken-styling it up this October 31st? Do you get caught by the curse of the cookie cutter costume in a bag, or do you bring in a team of designers to handcraft a close to perfect clone of your favorite musician?

With a few tricks up our sleeves, Halloween sure can be a treat for your wardrobe! If you’ve been a ModLife fan for some time, you might recall last year’s Modster Mash, featuring looks from the likes of Audrey Hepburn, a First Lady, a Flapper, Amelia Earhardt, and Max Fischer from Rushmore. This year, we’ve upped the ante to prove that you don’t have to waste your money on an overpriced disposable costume, simply create a character from your existing mod closet!

A few headliners of this year’s Styletacular are Marne as Lady Gaga and Aire as Coco Chanel.

Marne as Lady Gaga

You don’t have to be dirty rich to create a costume everyone will go ga ga over, just throw together a crazy ensemble that shows off your shape, and the boys boys boys won’t be able to take their eyes off of you! “Lady Gaga is my favorite celeb right now simply because of her wicked style and great voice. She’s not afraid to get people talking and take huge fashion risks. This is why I insisted Vasil help turn me into Miss Gaga for Halloween!”

Marne is wearing: To No A-Veil Headband, Sparkle in the City Necklace, Junebug Sunglasses, Rocket Jacket, Cartwheel Bodysuit, Swashbuckling Belt, Unicorn Princess Heels in Pewter, Girly Girl Gloves in Black, The Chesire Clutch!

Aire as Coco Chanel:

“I would like to add that it was an honor to portray Miss Coco Chanel.”

Aire is wearing: Louise Hat, Concerto Skirt, Tate Modern Gloves, Flipside Tights in Similars, My So-Called Heels, Stricly Ballroom Jewelry Set

These are just two of our ten looks total, all created from ModCloth items! Want to see the rest?

On September 29th, we filled you in on our totally awesome office challenge here at ModCloth, the “Make it Work!” after work contest. It’s about time we checked in with our designers to get a glimpse of where their minds will be leading their sewing hands! Before unveiling their final garments in mid-November, a concept check-in had been scheduled, and it appears that we have some creative minds at work!

Hannah: (above) I knew it when I saw it. There it was, one of those terrible, cringe-worthy, 80’s wind breakers, colors as bright as a Dorothy’s excursion in Oz. I’d gone to Goodwill, the preconceived notions in my head totaling zero. This jacket, however, changed all that. As someone inspired by designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Jean Paul Castelbajac, I have an effusive love for anything unexpected, surreal, or surprising – a penchant for taking ordinary items and turning them into something else. Drawing upon these influences, I bought the jacket and set out to jazz it up.

Natalie: (above) All I can say is that I hope my jacket  (and other items if I feel ambitious) will look as if a hippie and a service person from the 1940’s got married and had a baby. It should be all things mixed of hard, structured, and classic, as well as free, floral, and energetic. It’s about the juxtaposition of the opposites in life that make things interesting…but, we’ll see, right?

Curious to see what the rest of the designers are inspired by?

Winston along with the ModStaff would like to extend a big congrats to Arielle for scoring the $1000 Gift Certificate from our I Can Has Cheezburger Twitter contest!

On September 18th, we held a contest to commemorate National Cheeseburger Day! While 50 Twitter users were randomly chosen each hour to receive a goody filled prize pack, one winner was chosen at random who had to correctly complete all four rounds of the Cheezeburger contest to be entered for a chance to win our largest prize to date, a $1000 ModCloth gift certificate! With this being our biggest giveaway ever, we were curious, and just had to know more about the ModTweeter who struck it big!

Q: What part of the earth are you from?

A: I live in Santa Cruz, CA. since I go to school at UC Santa Cruz.

Q: Could you tell us a little about what you are currently doing, or a few words to describe yourself?

A: I’m 20 and a Junior, double majoring in History of Art and European History.  It’s my dream to work in a museum or gallery.  I’m working right now on study abroad plans, hoping to spend some time in Germany and Austria. I’m a wannabe artist and am addicted to clothing. Dresses and tights are pretty much my life.

Q: When did you first hear about and start shopping ModCloth?

A: It was about a year ago. I’d become completely obsessed with dresses and was searching for a store that matched my style.  I hit the jackpot when I found ModCloth–so many adorable dresses with the vintage feel that I love!

Want to see how Arielle plans on spending her ModMoney, and what her initial reaction was when she found out she had won? Keep reading! Read the rest of this entry »
