Romper, onesie, one-piece, jumpsuit, jumper, barboteuse, or playsuit? There may be a debate about how to classify these one-piece wonders, but one thing is for sure: they are one versatile, trendy piece that is here to stay!

The romper craze has been spotted all over the globe from street styles to a variety of celebrities that includes Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley, Ashley Olsen, and Rihanna! With the allure of knocking an outfit out with one garment instead of two (such as wearing a tee and shorts), the recent re-invention of the romper provides us with a fresh new look and a playful alternative to the dress. Vasil: The Dirty Martini Romper is a fun garment that enables confident women to show off their Tina Turner legs while looking classy and reserved.  Moreover, the romper is a look that demands minimal accessories, and on the hottest of summer days, doesn’t require a lot of effort to complete a polished look.

Vasil: Amy’s look is more sophisticated and even office-oriented, especially in professions that are  more forward-thinking and encourage personal style. This outfit features the season’s hottest trends – large jewelry, a wide leather belt, and an ever-so-slight drop-crotch pant. Her look is stylish but also very simple, featuring a combination of brown leather and a touch of glamour with gold accessories.

Vasil: Hannah’s look showcases how patterns can be paired on top of patterns and/or quirky decorative designs, as long as you pay attention to color. In addition to its small print, the Waikiki Onesie features a fully smocked top, which is flattering in that it secretly acts as a corset in the way that it hugs your figure. The peacock feather tights add a touch of whimsy to Hannah’s outfit, enabling her to express her bold personality while remaining the center of attention.

Vasil: The Jade Tree Romper is a versatile one-piece that will allow you to achieve an effortless and fun look, however you choose to style it. Julie’s outfit plays up the existing colors in her romper while mixing together sporty and classy elements with hipster accessories to create a truly comfortable and unique look.

Back in January, Vasil predicted the style trends that would rule 2009.  Have you been seeing a shift in style towards looks defined by earthy colors, ruffles, silhouette-defining belts,  and mixed patterns in the last couple of months? We certainly have! Here are our favorite trend-based looks for this summer!

• Mixing solid colors with light prints adds interest and fun to your outfits, like in Berry Cobbler. This accessorized two-pieced ensemble makes you appear perky and fun.

• In terms of color, Vasil predicted a domination of earthy and muted tones, primarily light beiges, pinks, and nudes: along with bold color accents. The light pink of  Tier-amisu makes the outfit appear fresh and feminine, but the oversized bag is perfect for the girl with a lot on her plate and a lot to carry with her!

Ruffles, pleats, darts, and other cut details play a significant role in Spring/Summer 2009 trends.

• The Boulevard Before Dawn Dress can transform you from a work setting to a great cocktail party to any dressy summer event you want to attend. The combination of ruffles at the top and multiple pleats which follow the shape of the dress will create a balanced look and feature your feminine silhouette. The flowered purse and tights take this outfit that’s perfectly suitable for daytime outings to a more sophisticated “night out” look.

Wedding Style Tip: Remember to consider the tone and location of the wedding when you’re choosing an outfit. For a country club or evening reception, something like Tux Goes Lux Dress paired with an evening bag is a good pick, but for a daytime affair, the more casual, but still stunning Reflection Pool Dress, paired with vibrant wedges is a better choice. In this installment of Get That Look!, Vasil transformed Susan into one of her favorite style icons: Gwen Stefani. Susan has loved Gwen’s style ever since the very first time she saw her in the Spiderwebs music video.

She loves how Gwen’s looks are always evolving and statement-making, transforming her into a true fashionista with a unique and memorable style. From her pink hair and braces to platinum blonde hair, milky white skin and bright red lips, her daring fashion risks have been inspirational to millions around the globe.

Gwen is not afraid to take chances and go from a very athletic, everyday chic look to a red carpet phenomenon.  She’s a true fashion chameleon. Whether it is punk or retro glamor, she can pull anything off and make it look trendy and stylish.

Moreover, Gwen can pull off any black and white pattern, polka dot, stripes, plaid or vintage- inspired style just as well as the newest trends.

“But,”  Vasil says, “always remember- the importance of having style icons is not to copy them, but to be inspired by them and translate that into your own style.”

Those of us in the Western hemisphere can usually detect style inspirations rooted in our own culture, but fashion trends are also influenced by cultures that aren’t always on our radar. This week, Vasil shows us how certain influences from his region of the world have trickled onto the runways in recent years.

Vasil says, “For the past couple of seasons, Balkan cultures, traditions and folklore have had a large impact on popular designers and fashion houses, such as Chanel, Kenzo, Dior, Galliano, Tao and Gucci. My Eastern European heritage, interest in Balkan folklore, and one of my new favorite blogs, inspired me to do some more research on this topic.  I discovered that similarities among the collections include the use of folk motives, primarily in the jewelry and highly decorative embroidery.”

“Different designers utilize the Balkan inspiration in different ways. Vivienne Westwood translates the Turkish Harem pants into a very classy and casual look. Christian Dior maintains the look and feel of a Turkish traditional costume. John Galliano, inspired by the ornamental and symbolic look of Slavic brides, presents his costume-like creations in a very traditional way. He utilizes silver coins, known as pendari, and large decorative belt buckles, pafti, which are very identifiable in the Bulgarian and Macedonian cultures. In a similar manner, Tao integrates embroidery motives, which hundreds of years ago would have represented various symbols and differentiated groups of people and their customs. The unique look of Chanel’s headpieces is clearly inspired by the rich folklore of Russia. Gucci and Kenzo also brilliantly incorporate the folklore of Russian and the surrounding republics into their collections, which were inspired by the Babushka and Matryoshka.”

It must be the case that Paris is not only the capital of high fashion, but also the place to see great street style. Today’s style comes from Adeline R.; the combination of multiple layers of clothes and necklaces, oversized scarves, and ripped shorts is what caught my attention and makes the outfit super trendy and yet unique.

Margo, an 18-year-old Russian spotted on  lookatme.ru is my style inspiration today. The mixture of diverse materials in her outfit, such as tulle, leather, and liquid spandex, makes the ensemble trendy and unique. Despite the classiness of black and white, the combination can be easily overdone. However, this look avoids color simplicity. The look is trendy, edgy, fun, youthful, and showcases attitude.

Today’s style inspiration comes from Anne-Solange, 30-year-old writer and journalist from the fashion capital-Paris! The outfit caught my attention due to its combination of menswear characteristics and feminine look. With the couple of floral and bright accents, Anne’s look represents spring and speaks comfort, personal style, and Parisian city-girl beauty.

Everyone can probably recall a “favorite” advertising campaign, commercial or photo spread. Stylists, photographers, and marketing teams work hard to create ads that are resonant and powerful, using success stories as inspiration. This week, I sat down with ModCloth stylist, Vasil, to discuss his favorite ad campaign and inspiration of all-time: Versace-Absolut, 1997.

Around the time of Gianni Versace’s death,  Donatella Versace led one of the most memorable fashion ad campaigns. Directed by Goran Dahlstrom, the Versace-Absolut campaign featured supermodels Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and Mark Findlay. Vasil says he chose this campaign as his favorite “not only because it features some of my favorite models and designers, but also because it combines advertising, fashion, creativity, and beauty in one.” Vasil added, “Many of us do not realize how much time, planning, and effort goes into creating a campaign that stands out and makes history.”

Planning and creativity are essential when working on such a massive project. The above image is one of the maps that were used to guide the shoot. Vasil says, “I am fascinated by the balance created by the models, the designer, and the brand Absolut. When working with industry leaders, it would be easy for one person to overshadow the others; however, this campaign features all parties equally while creating momentum for the client.” Vasil added, “Plus, when working with blocks of ice in in Northern Sweden, planning is even more vital!”
