Lesson One: Inspiration!
For the very first lesson, we are going to be talking about inspiration. What is it that you would really like to take better photos of? A new puppy? Daily outfit photos? Your adorable niece or nephew? Are you a crafter interested in cataloguing or selling your creations? Do you want to take a photo-a-day of yourself for a year? Pick something that excites you. Got it? Okay. This is going to be the subject you use to apply the techniques I will be presenting in future posts.

Style Icon: Gwyneth Paltrow
January 6th, 2009 by Natalie
![]()

We typically don’t like to feature such high profile stars as Gwyneth Paltrow, but there is something significant to note about this style maven. First of all, a little background to understand why Gwynnie is significant would be helpful. Being that she is 37 years old, a mother of two, married to Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin, and daughter of actress Blythe Danner and director Bruce Paltrow, she’s basically a hot mama who’s a pretty big deal in Hollywood.
Now, I am not here to go on about her accomplishments or to comment on her acting skills; I really don’t even care that she won an Academy Award, or that maybe, quite possibly, she’s a snob. What’s most significant to me is the stunning transformation this lady has taken on within the past year after having her two children.

Photo of the Week

www.Henri Cartier-Bresson/MAGNUM
For my first “Photo of the Week” post, I had to go here. This is the image that sparked my photography obsession. To this day, my heart races when I see this image from Henri Cartier-Bresson’s “The Decisive Moment” collection. At first sight, I wondered how many times the poor man had to jump into the water for the photographer to get the image he wanted….but upon further investigation, I learned that it wasn’t staged. WHAT!? No stylist? No high speed, five-frames-per-second camera? What on earth….Keep reading to find out how he did it… Read the rest of this entry »
What Are You Wearing for New Year’s Winner!
January 5th, 2009 by Molly

New Year’s may be behind us, but we’re still talking about how great you all looked! Thanks to all who shared their New Year’s Eve outfit pictures. It was lovely seeing you in your 2009 finest.

Our favorite ensemble came from Katie. She donned the Dizzy Lizzy dress and Dinner and a Movie Boots, and paired them with colorful, eco-friendly, native-crafted Panamanian jewelry. Katie will receive a $10 gift certificate, and start the year off as our very first winner!

There’s about a billion “Top ____ of 2008″ out there, and while we were composing our ModMen of 2008, we sifted through quite a few of them for inspiration. There were some we found a little weird, and some we really liked. Here are a few of our favorites:

Meet Danielle

Hey Hey! I’m Danielle, the photographer here at ModCloth (that’s me with my Popple of choice, Party Popple). I take care of all the photography for the site, from the cute products and clothes to the lookbooks and homepage images, and anything else that pops up ( i.e. Winston in a Santa hat, Winston in a bee costume, Winston in a scarf) - all with my trusty Jack Russell, Rad, by my side.My early days of photography began with me chasing the family cat and dog around the house and terrorizing them with the camera, which, I admit, I still do on occasion. I’m excited to be introducing two new weekly blog posts: “Photo of the Week” and “Dani’s Photo School.” So get your cameras ready, because there will be assignments. If you have anything specific you want me to write about, send me a note or leave a comment. Outside of photography, I am a karaoke fiend, love to travel, and I’m obsessed with Sharks. Seriously, I wanted to be a shark trainer when I was 4.
Vintage Shopping Online

One of my favorite places to check out for inspiration (the items are way too expensive to purchase) is 1stdibs. They have antique dealers from around the world posting their best items, and they have a great portfolio feature on this site. If you create an account you can save any item you like and basically create an online scrapbook of your favorite pieces. Even when the items sell, they’ll stay in your portfolio, giving you a great inspiration board whenever you need it.

Alright, it may officially be the new year, I am still adamantly refusing to let go of the holidays. (I haven’t even made my resolutions yet!) So, as one final goodbye to the 2008 holiday season and to commemorate the New Year, let’s look back one more time–way back–for a little history lesson (thanks to the Times Square Alliance) on the origins of the famous ball drop in Times Square!

Style Inspiration
January 2nd, 2009 by Lindsay

Originally posted on garancedore. As I finished up an epic laundry day and my wardrobe is back to full strength, I find myself in a v neck, hoodie and jeans. This casual yet stylish look is great inspiration for comfortable looks in 2009. The sweater makes it eye-catching, but it’s still (or so it looks) comfy enough for everyday wear.
Outfit of the Week: This Will Be Our Year
January 2nd, 2009 by Sari

Happy New Year ModClothers! Since the time of New Year’s resolutions are upon us I thought I’d use two of mine as my inspiration for this weeks outfit. Two of my resolutions this year are to travel more and stick to a budget (in order to have money to travel more). So here is an outfit that is travel-friendly and versatile enough to not bust your budget!

A British import by designer Darimeya ,the Modern Carousel Tunic is classic, wearable (and easy to pack). Perfect for a stroll through the MOMA or a shopping excursion on Portobello Road this piece can be worn all sorts of ways! I paired it with the Betsey Johnson Stir Up Tights and The Headliner’s Scarf, for that fickle European weather. I also included pieces like the Star Struck Booties, Quilted Kisslock Bag, and Black Tie Affair Belt. These pieces are great because they can be mixed and matched with loads of outfits.
