Classic Red Lips: Makeup’s Little Black Dress

Makeup trends come and go, but just like the little black dress, red lipstick will always be a “do.” It’s classic, it’s feminine, it’s flattering, and you can wear it everywhere and anywhere for as long as time goes on. We understand red lipstick can be a little intimidating to apply, so we’re giving you the full how-to so you can make a statement with confidence. Pucker up, buttercup!

Step One

Prep your lips by mixing a little bit of coconut or olive oil with sugar. Massage into your lips to buff away dead skin, and then let it set for about a minute so the oil can be absorbed. You want the softest, smoothest lips when wearing a statement shade!

Step Two

Grab a deep red lip liner that matches the lipstick you’ll be wearing. We’re using our Rip-Roaring Radiance Lip Liner Duo in Cerise and Red. Carefully outline your cupid’s bow, as pictured. Next, line around the perimeter of your lips, slightly over-lining on the outer upper corners and across the bottom. Finally, fill in your lips completely with the lip liner. This will provide a nice, sticky base for your lipstick and will help it last for hours!

Step Three

Next, carefully apply your lipstick and then blot it with a piece of tissue paper. Apply a second layer and blot again. The layers and blotting will build up volume and will also help your lipstick stay in place. By the way, we’re wearing our Rip Roaring Radiance lipstick in Red Velvet!

Step Four

This next step is optional, but it’s a trick that Marilyn Monroe used to make her lips look more pillow-y and voluminous! Dab a tiny amount of highlighter (or shimmery eye shadow) onto the bottom center of your lips, then blend in with your fingertips or a cosmetic brush. And there you have it — luscious, enviable red lips that’ll never go out of style!

P.S.: To complete the look, we went with a matte mauve eye, classic cat eye, loads of mascara, and a touch of highlighter on top of the cheeks! Perfect for Valentine’s Day!
