The Style Gallery is a great new way for you to view, love, and share outfit photos. It’s meant to showcase all the expressive, creative, and inspirational personalities of our community!
Having your ‘head in the clouds’ isn’t a great thing, that is, unless if you have this simple, decorative DIY project on your mind! Shed a little personality onto your living space with these cloud cut-outs. In just a few steps, your own clouds can cover up an unsightly heap of wires, break up the rhythm of a bookshelf, or just be stylishly stacked into the stratosphere!
Their formula isn’t ground-breaking, but craft a few and before you know it their ‘cumul-ative’ effect will take over your crib!
What you’ll need…
* You’ll only need these materials if you plan on hanging your clouds
1. Draw the outline of a cloud in light pencil. Start and finish this first one, if you like this shape, just trace the second one to match!
2. Time to cut it out! If you’ve never used an X-acto knife, lightly press down, puncturing though part of the foam core while you follow the outline over top of your cutting surface. You might have to lightly press down and follow the outlines about 2 – 3 times before your cloud is cut through all the way, and separated.
3. Trace the outer edges of the cut-out cloud with black marker. Trace around more than once for a bolder, more defined cartoon-like outline.
4 (optional). To anchor your clouds for hanging from a book on your bookshelf (as seen above), a hook on the ceiling, or any other object, use the thumbtack to puncture a small hole on either end. Cut the length of your clear wire to your desired length, feed through the holes, and your cloud is ready to rise!
Now that we’ve bolted your creativity, can you think of any other cute ideas for foam core cut-outs?
This is ingenious! Major love going on over here!
Cute idea. I spot the rabbit book ends we used to sell!
Absolutely ADORABLE!!! But alternatives if your room is aready white?
Jaclyn, if you got some permanent double sided tape and any pretty paper, you could stick the paper to the foam core before you cut, and make a different shape. Like big flowers.
@Jaclyn: My room is actually white too! If you can put small nails in your wall, I suggest hanging them at any height to make a sort of cloud-wallpaper. Also, hanging them from the ceiling can create depth, and interest to a white-walled space. Depending on how vibrant your taste, maybe try them in different colors of foam core?
If you try them out and are able to upload pictures, we’d love to see them!
Happy crafting 🙂
This is a great idea for my dorm room!
You can always do rainclouds for a white room, and make little lightning bolts/raindrops dangle down from the bottom.
Plus you could do sparrow cutouts or rainbow cutouts. The choices are endless.
i would really like to make cloud book ends. i love a good diy.
This look fantastic!
Wow this DIY is so simple yet makes a world of a difference in beautifying the place. Love it!

I made a few cutout clouds, a sparrow, and a large sun to hang from my ceiling. It’s a wonderful addition to my room! Thank you for the idea!
