We’re about to show you how to create the easiest, dreamiest DIY salve — one you can feel good about making with your own hands with your own natural ingredients, too. This stuff is super versatile and will hydrate your skin in no time at all. Make a batch just for yourself, or consider gifting some to friends and family.
We opted for a lavender and rosebud salve, which makes for a particularly lovely aromatic experience.
What You Need:
- 4 oz. olive oil
- .25 oz. shea or cocoa butter
- .8 oz. shaved beeswax (or beeswax beads)
- 2 Tbsp dried lavender buds
- 2 Tbsp dried rosebuds
- Rose essential oil
The first step is to infuse your oil with the lavender and rosebuds. To do this, create a double boiler, or place a pyrex/glass bowl on top of a sauce pan simmering with water. Place four to five ounces of oil into the bowl, then add your dried lavender and rosebuds. Let the water simmer for an hour to two hours. If you’re making a larger batch, you can infuse your oils in a Crockpot. We recommend setting it to low and letting it warm as long as possible, but at least two hours.
After infusing, use a cheesecloth or strainer to remove the buds from the oil, then return the oil back to your bowl.
Next, add your beeswax and shea or cocoa butter to the infused oil. You may need to return it to the heat to melt the wax completely. Everything should be completely dissolved before moving onto the next step. Note that you can find beeswax in all different forms. We’re using the beaded beeswax since it dissolves easily, but you can buy a block and grate it, as well.
For a little more of a fragrance boost, add 10-15 drops of essential oil to your oil mixture. If you’re making a big batch, or giving as gifts, we recommend adding about five capsules of vitamin E to this 4 oz. recipe. Vitamin E will prolong the shelf life.
Pour your oil into a storage container (we’re using a recycled glass jar). Let it harden and then use it often.
