Style Glossary: Double Your Fun!

Greetings fashion lovers! This week’s Style Glossary post is twice as special, because we’re going to discuss both tiered skirts and scalloping (and my favorite skirt on the site!).

A tiered skirt (or dress) is classically a straight-cut skirt, with a series of flounces either in a circular pattern or on the straight of the material. This style was first made popular in the 1840s, but its still going strong some 170 years later. Who would have thought?

Scalloping can be found in all sorts of garments, from the trim of a sweet vintage dress to a funky collar on an oh-so-mod blouse –  it’s a must-have in any well rounded vintage wardrobe. It’s easily spotted by it’s rounded, semi-circle design, and our Polarizing Skirt is a perfect example of scalloping at it’s best.

I feel like this skirt needs a tiny fish off to the side or something. It reminds me of the ocean.

Tiered skirts were also seen in ancient Minoan culture, located on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean. The link below shows a statue of a Minoan snake goddess who wears such a skirt.

Historians are unsure of whether or not the skirt was sewn in layers, as the one above probably is, or if the skirt consisted of multiple skirts of varying lengths stacked on top of one another..
