Definite Party ‘Do: Hair That Glitters (Literally!)

DSC_0046 copy

We love glitter so much that we’re dusting a half-up hairstyle with the sparkly stuff! Feel free to get creative with the idea; maybe your braids are wrapped into a bun or finagled into a classic milkmaid braid or braided crown. It’s your New Year’s — make it marvelous!

What You Need:

Craft glitter

Clear elastics

Bobby pins

Curling iron

Step One: Curl your hair to create some texture and body. Remember: the larger the barrel, the thicker the waves.

Step Two: Take a 1-inch section of hair on one side of your head and create a standard three-strand braid. Secure the end with a clear elastic.

Step Three: Spray the braid liberally with hairspray.

Step Four: Quickly, before the hairspray dries, apply your loose glitter to the braid. This gets a little messy, so either stand over the sink or outside. It’s also a good idea to wear an old shirt that you can change out of.

Step Five: To keep the glitter in place, spray the braid with hairspray one last time. Repeat steps two through five on the other side of your head.

Step Six: Drape one braid across the back of your head and secure with two crossed bobby pins. Repeat with the other braid, making sure to tuck the ends underneath each other.

Wendy Rose Gould is a latte-loving, vintage-collecting, cat-adoring beauty and fashion writer whose work has appeared both online and in print. While she grew up in urban Indiana surrounded by horse buggies and corn fields, she's since moved west to Phoenix (after a stint in South Korea) where cacti and haboobs reign supreme. Wendy believes a woman should never leave the house without enviable hair and a spritz of her staple perfume. And also mascara. Never leave the house without mascara.
