Hauntingly Beautiful Halloween Nail Art

It doesn’t have to be Halloween for us to enjoy the quiet beauty of an old, weathered cemetery. Even if you’re not a fan of spooky stories and eerie adventures, this enchanting mani will put you in an elegantly autumnal mood. If you’re feeling festive, try pairing it with some equally unexpected Halloween fashion and decor!

What You Need

  • Dark purple polish
  • Light purple polish
  • A sheer, shimmery purple or gold glitter (we’re using a duochrome that incorporates both)
  • A black polish
  • Nail art brush
  • Makeup sponge wedges (pictured below)

Step One

On one makeup wedge, apply a strip of light purple polish and a strip of dark purple polish. Stamp the sponge onto your nails using a dabbing motion. The first coat will be very sheer, as will the second. Build up opacity by adding layers. You’ll need to reapply polish onto your sponge frequently in order to do this. To minimize mess, consider framing your nails with tape before stamping. Don’t worry if things aren’t totally tidy, though — we’ll get to that later!

Step Two

Once you’ve reached a desired opacity, apply your sheer, shimmery polish to a new wedge sponge, and then apply on top of your dried purple ombre.

Step Three

If you’ve taped off your nails, you can carefully remove your tape now. Use a cotton bud and nail polish remover to clean up the areas around your nails, creating crisp, clean edges for your artwork.

Step Four

Using your nail art brush and a black nail polish, draw the ground on the tips of your nails. Don’t think too hard about this — just create shapes that appeal to you. We added a few shallow hills to create some dimension.

Step Five

Finally, use vertical strokes to create graves, trees, or whatever other silhouettes float your boat. Try varying the size and shape of your silhouettes to help create a feeling of depth.

+ How do you bring the Halloween holiday into your look?
