No matter where you go this New Year’s Eve or any upcoming special night out, chances are you plan to get a little spruced up for the night’s festivities. This vintage-meets-modern wavey hairstyle is the perfect go-to for all sorts of events, so you can count on it wherever you’re headed. As a major bonus, it only takes 20 minutes tops to recreate, photographs beautifully from all angles (we know there will be selfies and candids galore), and is full of timeless style.
Spray & Curl
The first thing we’re going to do is create some thick, soft, cascading vintage-style waves. There are a couple tricks to achieving this:
- Apply flexible hold hairspray to your hair and comb it out before you start curling.
- Next, use a large barrel curling wand (at least 1-inch).
- Make sure every curl is going in the same direction. We recommend curling small to medium-sized sections of hair (about one-to-two square inches).
Cool & Comb
After you’ve curled all of your hair, let your hair cool completely. Hair only has memory in a cooled state, so if you brush the curls out too early, they will fall flat. Very gently brush or comb your hair starting at the crown and moving downward in one motion.
Next, twist a small section of hair from one side of your head and secure it with two criss-crossed bobby pins just above your ear. Place hair on top to conceal the bobby pins. You can lift some hair out of the way before you pin your hair if that makes things easier.

Finally, tuck two hair combs into the twisted section. We layered ours slightly to create more fluidity. Protip: If you’re having trouble getting the combs to stay put, spray a bit of hairspray on the twisted section.
That’s it! Think you’ll give this one a try?
