Confession: one of the first beauty products I ever purchased was black lipstick. My angsty pre-teen heart took one look at that $1.99 tube of inky charcoal lipcolor, and immediately fell in love. I spent the remainder of 1997 channeling The Craft and making a valiant, yet fruitless effort to look cool and aloof. There’s no doubt that ’90s style has returned in full force this season, ushering in the return of black and deep burgundy lip color, and we here at ModCloth couldn’t be more thrilled.
If you’ve been stumped on how to style these lovely lip shades, we’ve got you covered: today ModEmployee Bree is modeling some of our favorite on-site styles, paired with the most stylish shades of the season.
CHARCOAL CHIC — An inky black lip makes quite a statement when paired with varsity-inspired style. We added a pop of color with cranberry-hued tights and a statement necklace, and kept the remainder of Bree’s make-up light to draw attention to her unique lip color.
In this outfit:
All Sports of Awesome Cardigan
Wanders of the World Top
Taking in Tokyo Skirt
Layer it on Tights in Burgundy
Amuse-mint Park Flat in Licorice
Betsey Johnson Collect Calls Bag
Take Nothing for Pomegranate Necklace
DON BURGUNDY — We can’t get enough of burgundy and blue. Pair a deep red lip color like burgundy with navy or dusty blue (or both!) to really make the shade pop. Complete the look with black accessories, because rules were made to be broken.
In this outfit:
Luck Be a Lady Dress in Scholar
Artistic Afternoon Top
Law of Attraction Bootie
Cats All I’ll Say Hat
Suspends Thriller Tights

Wait…are those tights crimson AND patterned? I’ve seen patterned tights and crimson tights, but never tights with both features. What a great find! I like that the use of a bold lip color really brings out the contours of a woman’s lips.
Hi Pualani! The pattern that you’re seeing is actually Bree’s tattoos peeking through, neat effect, right?
That is cool! Though, now I’m thinking someone should make them!
Love the cat ears on that hat. I simply must have it! <3 Great outfit ideas, though I get cold so easily, I usually wear maxi skirts in the fall, but with a pair of warm tights, its feasible to wear a cute short dress!
Model is just a-maz-ing. Where can I see more photo of her?
