Style Glossary: Millinery

From boaters to facinators, from cloches to birdcages – millinery is the focus of this installment of Style Glossary!

Millinery is design, crafting, and sale of (you guessed it) hats! I felt this word was particularly on topic, as headwear from our Nicole Fascinator to our Fashion Fractal Hat have been making waves across the style world!

The origin of the word is unclear, but it is thought that it came from the word “Milener” as in a resident of Milan, a capitol of fashion in Europe.

Does your wardrobe involve a healthy collection of millinery, or are you waiting for the perfect hat to find its way to you?

I actually took a Millinery class this past semester and hat making is A LOT harder than one would assume.

I have some fashion hats, but I find myself always hesitant to wear them.

Indeed an old (need to be revived) trade..In a recent trip to New Orleans, I discovered an amazing boutique/millinery shoppe in the quarter….every hat is one of a kind and you can help make a custom hat as well! Fleur de Paris on Royal St.!

Bought a hat (very similar to the graham cracker cloche but with black ribbon) a little over a year ago and didn’t wear it since my boyfriend at the time laughed at it. Well, a couple of months ago, I pulled it out and started to wear it – to my complete surprise, it’s probably the most complimented thing I own! From friends and family to perfect strangers on the street all stop to say how cute it is. Not to mention the current boyfriend absolutely adores it 🙂 Hats have won me over!
