Style Icon: Wednesday’s Child Is Full of Fashion!

She’s creepy and she’s kooky, for sure! But one thing the famed theme song left out was Wednesday Addams’ seriously scary knack for style! From her impeccably braided coiffure and moon-shaped, ghastly pale face to her grimly hued garb, she was the picture of shriek-chic, a style I can’t help but want to channel as Halloween creeps closer and closer.

I grew up harboring a special fondness for all of the Addams, especially Wednesday, after whom my older sister was named. As a child, I flipped through dog-eared volumes of the original cartoons, first penned by Charles Addams in the late 30s and often featured in The New Yorker. And of course, there was the 60’s black and white sitcom, saved from obscurity by syndication. But it was the 1991 big screen re-imaging of the Addams clan that truly solidified my affection for the spooky crew, especially the disturbed, yet completely adorable, daughter.

Played with eerie monotone perfection by a young Christina Ricci, Wednesday was a force to be reckoned with, and not just sartorially speaking. Sure, she always looked spellbinding in her signature dark frock with a white collar, but it was her extracurricular interests, from studying morbid medical tomes to plotting her brother’s demise, that made Wednesday a lovable – and iconic – misfit for audiences of all ages.

Has Halloween got you craving  très ‘creep’ items to add a little bewitching allure to your ensembles? Take a few cues from the runway and vintage styles to capture Wednesday’s signature chilling fashion.

1. “The Fencer” print by artist and Etsy seller Jessica Grundy. 2. My Pet Octopus Cuff. 3. Vintage dress from Etsy seller The Arbor Vitae. 4. Yves Saint Laurent Fall 2011 via 5. Eye Disease Cured Without Surgery book from Etsy seller The Replay Lounge. 6. Creepy doll from Etsy seller Magnolia’s Caboose. 7.  Rachel Antonoff Spring 2012.

What spellbinding style maven will you be embodying this October 31st?

I’ve always loved the Addams Family! Is it weird if I consider Wednesday to be a kindred spirit? lol

Lovely post, Molly! I loved watching the Addams Family movies when I was a kid because Wednesday was the only girl who was smart and cool enough to relate to 🙂 Well, Matilda was pretty good too. But Wednesday was up there.
