Behind the Design: Julie and Sara Dish About the March Collection

With all the gorgeous hand-drawn prints, elevated fabrications, and timeless silhouettes, our March collection is nothing short of stunning. Print Designer Julie and Senior Apparel Designer Sara grace us with their insights once again about harnessing their appetites and springtime imagination to make these namesake label pieces possible.

Tell us a little about your print design process for this story.

One thing about this design team that may separate us from others in the fashion industry is, we like to EAT! We are all avid cooks, we collect recipes and swap culinary tips, and we each frequent our respective neighborhood farmers markets at the weekend. I was inspired by the bounty of spring! Farmers markets are such a great place to get inspired—the colors and textures of the fruits and veggies, the cute reusable bags people are toting around, the energy of waking up on a Saturday morning to get your grub on! Also, there are normally a lot of dogs at farmers markets, and I think seeing/petting dogs is crucial to having an enjoyable weekend. I started by checking out the farmers’ markets and painting my faves—tomatoes, carrots, artichokes, onions…. I’m basically also listing the salad ingredients I’m eating right now.

What favorite pieces/prints should we look out for?

Our rainbow-heirloom tomato print skirt. It’s a celebration of two of our favorite things at ModCloth: beautiful produce and rainbows! I also adore our illustrated floral print on the Purely Pretty Pleated Skirt; the fresh green colorway is so wearable, yet punchy, and I had such a blast painting the pattern.

How’s this collection getting you excited for the season ahead?

I truly am so excited for the seasonal fruits and veggies that my local farmers market will have. I’m excited to throw on a breezy dress, some comfy tennis shoes, and get a little color on my shoulders before returning home to get cooking! My closet needs some happy bright colors, and the fresh greens, vibrant oranges and pinks, and sunshine yellows in this collection are just the thing.

What sort of fun would you get up to wearing these looks?

These looks are perfect for picnics, brunching al fresco, walking your dog (or cat, or aardvark, whatever’s your thing!), or maybe having a long lunch to break up your work week!

What inspiration brought this collection to life?

Spring is a time of new beginnings, fresh starts, and renewal. We wanted to capture that excitement and promise, and channel that through how we dress. The overall styling is very feminine and has a lightness to it, which is just what we are craving after the heaviness of winter has lifted.

What are some key pieces and silhouettes we’ll find?

We are really bringing it this month when it comes to fabrics. We have sweet textured cottons, seersucker, floaty chiffons, linen with just a touch of rayon (so that it’s less prone to wrinkling and for better drape), just to name a few.

We have a capsule of styles featuring contrast piping details (like the Outlined Delight Wide-Leg Pants and the Between the Lines Belted Dress) that feel fresh and modern with retro vibes.

The Looking Back Sleeveless Dress is one of our favorites for spring. It’s so versatile and fun to wear, and the fabric is a beautiful yarn dye our team sourced. It also comes in solid colors.

We borrowed the skirt from one our favorite dresses, the Fabulous Fit and Flare, to create this stunning new dress in a beautiful, textured cotton.

Where do you envision the ModCloth gal wearing this collection?

We are always asking ourselves, “where is she wearing this?” The more locations and occasions we can come up with, the better, because versatility is key!

We have some beautiful bridal and guest-of wedding pieces in the collection, and we also have a lot of outfits that you could wear to work, to brunch, on a bike ride, or a picnic.

Save these savory looks for later!

About Savannah

If something's happening on stage, you can probably find Savannah there, from house shows and dramatic theater productions to faraway metal gigs and full-on festivals. Otherwise, she spends her days elbows-deep in carb-heavy meals, rattling about years spent overseas, and testing the creative limits of an all-black wardrobe.
