BTS x 2! Behind The Scenes with the Back To School Photo Shoot

“Those ModCloth photo shoots – how do they come together!?”  I know that this has been the most burning question on everyone’s minds since ModCloth’s fabulous new Back To School homepage launched.  Well, wonder no more, fair friend, we’re going to give you a sneak peak of how our latest Back To School shoot was done.  There’s no pop quiz at the end, so read in ease!

Make a quick study of the photo shoot here!

A photoshoot all begins when our visual creative team – graphic artists, stylist, and photographer – meet up to toss around some ideas.  Sounds fun, right?  It is, but don’t go thinking that this is easy as the ABCs.  As Natalie, one of graphic designers, puts it, “many ideas are thrown out, [and] many visual ideas are put together, [then] presented for approval and scrapped, redone, and hashed out [again].” For this shoot, Danielle, our photographer, who is “obsessed with chalkboard paint”, spotted a photo of a chalk-spattered blackboard that set this photoshoot’s ball of creative thought rolling.

Idea? Check.  Conceptualization? Check.  Next? Preparation.  Natalie and Danielle headed out – skirt, heels and all – to pick up supplies like large wooden boards, chalkboard paint, and chalk.  They spent the next few days painting boards with the chalkboard paint and hammering different colors of chalk to a dusty pulp.  Hair and make-up artists, as well as models, were booked, and things really started coming together.

When the big day finally came, everything was in order.  This shoot took place in two locations – a local park and in our photo studio.  Even Winston wanted to get in on the fun.

The models arrived, then their hair and make up was done.  Next, they got into their outfits!

Vasil, our stylist, made sure the outfits looked great.  When Vasil styles for a photo shoot, he makes sure that “the initial concept [of the shoot] ties well with the looks and the way the models wear the garments.”  His fashionable eye ensured that these back to school looks were congruent with the overall creative design.

With the models all dressed and dolled up, the shoot was ready to go!   In the park shoot, the models had to pose with invisible objects (as though typing on a typewriter, for example) that would later be put into the photo by our graphic designers.  For the shoot at our photo studio, the spirited models had a great time tossing chalk dust at each other to create a super series of shots.

And so, the shoot was done and ready to be sent on to the graphic designers.  A+ to everyone for a job well done!

Putting a shoot together is much more difficult than I imagined! It does look like a lot of fun, though.

I love the idea of taking vintage looks and modern looks and creating something new. And the chalk board idea is pretty sweet! My favorite outfit from this shoot has to be the Drama club outfit. I’m definitely going to have to create one similar! ^.^
