According to Associate Accessories Buyer Lauren, the Camp Director Tote debuted in the summer of 2012 with a buttercream yellow color. Since then, this same bag has been offered in over 25 different versions, ranging from cherry red to quirky dinosaurs. Throughout the years, it’s been transformed into a backpack, given fabric upgrades and the option of a zipper closure, and has become a fun way to showcase our amazing in-house prints. Although we no longer stock the original Camp Director Tote, it’s fox-patterned sibling has been a ModCloth star since 2014. Fun fact: that very same fox colorway has been reordered 18 times! The Camp Director Tote remains a favorite across personalities and professions with its roomy, laptop-and-textbook-friendly interior, sleek faux-leather accents, and adorable iterations.

In your opinion, what makes the Camp Director tote the perfect canvas for showcasing unique prints?
Ha, in a technical sense, a lot of our Camp Director Totes are made of canvas—or a similar-to-canvas woven fabric, so it literally makes a great canvas for our prints. But in a more abstract sense, I think that using an accessory—especially such a versatile, catch-all-do-all like the Camp Director—as a way to mix in some playful prints is a really clever styling trick. If your career demands that you are a bit more buttoned up in your daily business dress, your Camp Director Tote makes a playful laptop bag, textbook carrier, or briefcase.
Walk us through the inspiration for the adorable pencil print.
I was so truly obsessed with school supplies growing up, and I guess I still am, and can totally go and buy them whenever I want—I’m an adult! This print is super graphic and I adore the colors. I was inspired by my nostalgia for getting a new pack of colored pencils, emptying it out, and testing each one of them.
What is it like designing a print that strikes the happy medium between community influence and brand perspective?
Creating prints that will resonate with our community, sit well within our brand identity, feel fashion forward, and hit on our brand ethos of “vintage-inspired” is always a challenge, but it’s a very fun problem to try and solve with each new season. There are so many people and perspectives that go into the products we create for our community, so when we do something like Be the Buyer, it truly is like getting yet another great set of eyes on our designs. The community engagement is out of this world; our customers are unlike any others that I’ve experience before working in this industry.
