On an overcast Sunday in New York City, dozens of fashion bloggers, brand experts, and technology gurus gathered in Union Square to discuss fashion’s complex and constantly evolving relationship with social media at the Chictopia10 Media Tech Summit. Social media has rapidly gained momentum as one of the most powerful forces in fashion today – bloggers use websites such as Chictopia and Weardrobe to share daily outfit photos, e-retailers use Facebook to converse with their fan base, and even high-end luxury brands have realized the power of effectively using Twitter.
At Chictopia10, panelists touched upon everything from the value of authenticity in both fashion brands and blogs to the strong convergence of social media and search media for brand promotion.
In between panels, Chictopia10 guests moseyed over to the ModCloth photo booth, where our lovely photographer, Kristin, snapped daily outfit photos and paparazzi-worthy group shots. Check out the collection of chic style on our Flickr!
Fashion bloggers stopped by our photobooth for an outfit photo!
A powerhouse panel featured Chictopia CEO Helen Zhu, the San Francisco Chronicle‘s Dino-Ray Ramos, blogger Jasmine Hwang of Transient Withdrawal, and ModCloth’s very own Susan Koger! Their topic of debate? Inclusivity in the fashion world. Moderator Kristie Kay wondered, with the abundance of fashion bloggers and notable style Twitterers, has the fashion industry become more inclusive?
“I’m a firm believer in getting the customer involved,” said Susan. “She wears your product, she’s the one buying it, so include her in the process. Fashion becoming more inclusive won’t hurt anyone. It gives more people the courage to get involved in fashion. It’s going to empower the next generation of people interested in fashion.” (We’re not biased or anything, but we think Susan hit the nail on the head!)
In the “Visibility in the Online World” panel, E.J. Samson stressed the value of using social media to connect with readers and customers on a personal level. As the Web Director of Teen Vogue Online, he also offered valuable tips for getting a job in the fashion writing community, recommending one should “show that you’re interested in more than just fashion,” and “update your blog regularly – and have an awesome blog!”
Panel Three included reps from Twitter and Google, a Canadian fashion blogger, and the executive director of a social media marketing and communications agency. Above all else, Panel Three suggested creativity in social media content as a brand or blogger’s biggest asset.

Chictopia10 ended with a fantastic Designer Showcase, which highlighted indie brands C/FAN, Alyssa Bird, and jewelry designer duo, Triskaidekaphobia. We loved each and every presentation, and we look forward to seeing more from these up-and-coming designers in the future!
Overall, Chictopia10 was a huge success! Rubbing elbows with our fave fashion bloggers and noteworthy industry professionals was a phenomenal way to end our whirlwind of days at New York Fashion Week!

I was in attendance at the Conference and I loved it! I think everyone there learned something from the panels. It was also very cool to interact with other bloggers.
