Eek, It’s Here! The Make the Cut Prints Charming Dress is Available!

072314-mtc-headerMeet Jessica. The mastermind behind our winning Make the Cut: ‘Prints’ Charming print (she created the Forest Things First dress). This 29-year-old, Northeastern native spends her days freelancing in several creative capacities, well…when she’s not being a special agent, of course. And from the sounds of it, it’s not just her print that’s full of personality — this self-described “curious, silly [and] stubborn” soul is sure to split up her day with dance-party breaks and jam sessions a la Wes Anderson soundtracks. We’re so excited to induct Jessica’s spectacular dress into our selection of ModCloth exclusive pieces. And we’ve gotta say, we’re pretty excited she was going through a “tiny tree phase” when she designed it. Read on to learn more about her style, inspiration and all-around life adventures:

ModCloth: We love your design style! Can you tell us a bit about your sense of fashion?
Jessica: Wearing bright colors and bold patterns makes me happy! Green is probably the color I have the most in my closet. I try to find a balance in dressing comfortably and looking polished. If I’m going out I’ll throw on a printed dress with a jacket or cardigan and my metallic booties.

Do you have any hobbies? Tell us about your favorite one.
Yup, I love knitting, sewing, cooking and I’m hoping to start my own container garden this year. I’d really like to grow some herbs and veggies that we can eat this summer.

Other than winning the Make the Cut contest, what is something you are really proud of?
After college, I spent 6 months living in Japan doing a research project on Japanese Monsters and Mythology. At first it was a little overwhelming living alone and not speaking much Japanese. It gave me a chance to really focus on my work and I loved being able to bike everywhere. At times it was challenging, but it was an amazing experience and I’m so happy I did it.

What specific inspiration helped inform your Make the Cut design?
I get stuck on drawing certain things sometimes, and found myself in a tiny tree phase. I had also just finished watching Twin Peaks and wanted to reference it somehow, without being too super literal. It’s such an amazing and strange show, it wasn’t hard to come up with a few things that were fun to draw and seemingly unrelated, but they all make sense together if you’ve seen it.

Where would you wear your printed dress?
Dance parties, dinner-and-movie date night, picnics, vacation, and on spring walks! I can’t wait to wear it.

So funny this was Twin Peaks inspired! I picked up on the references right away and thought maybe I was over-reaching to see the Twin Peaks references. The owls, the coffee, the logs–and even just the trees… I noticed it immediately and thought maybe it was just a coincidence. Pleased to see it’s not 🙂 I love that it’s obviously Twin Peaks inspired to someone who is a fan of the show, but not so over the top that it would be picked up on by someone who’s not familiar.

note to self: stop buying dresses just because they’re inspired by your favorite tv show…

I would totally do anything to own this dress (well, except buy it since I have no money). Like sell my soul. Or, at least rent it out hourly. I need this dress!
