Contest Theme: Teacher-Inspired Prints

We’re bringing back our popular Make the Cut contest! Whether you’re a teacher or a teacher’s pet, this contest is for you! In honor of World Teachers’ Day on October 5th, we’re asking you to submit original teacher-themed prints from 10/5/17 through 10/18/17. Using our popular pencil-print Cotton A-Line Skirt with Pockets as inspiration (see photo below), we can’t wait to see what you come up with—from apples to abacuses, we want to see all the prints.

Share Your Idea on Social for a Chance to Win

All you need to do is post your print on Instagram or Twitter with #MaketheCutContest and @ModCloth in the caption or Tweet. One grand prize winner will receive a $500 gift certificate to ModCloth, and we will make their print! Plus, three lucky finalists each get $100 gift certificates. What are you waiting for? Put on your teacher hat and get started!

The ‘Prints-iples’ of the Contest

When:
10/5/17-10/18/17: Submissions are open.
10/24/17-10/26/17: The ModCloth Instagram and Twitter social communities will vote on the finalists.
10/30/17: On or around the end of the month, we’ll announce the grand-prize winner.
What: Share a picture of your original print on Instagram or Twitter with #MaketheCutContest and @ModCloth in the caption. The ModCloth team will narrow your submissions down to four finalists, and the ModCloth community (you!) will vote on the winner.
Win: One grand prize winner receives a $500 ModCloth gift certificate, and we will make their print! Three finalists each get $100 gift certificates.

The Fine Print
Q: Do I have to be a teacher or designer?
A: No! Anyone can enter, you just have to be 18+ years old and living in the US.

Q: Is it required to buy a ModCloth item?
A: Nope. No purchase necessary to enter.

Q: What will the final garment look like?
A: It will be the same silhouette as our pencil-print Cotton A-Line Skirt with Pockets.

Q: Who chooses the winner?
A: A #TeamModcloth committee of buyers and designers will choose four finalists, and then the final winner will be picked by you.

Q: What should the pic or video be?
A: Get creative! It can be a photograph, drawing/sketch/painting, craft project, or a digitally generated graphic—something that gives us an idea of how we can bring your inspo to life! By submitting your design, you’re verifying that ModCloth has the legal rights to reproduce the design. And this may sounds obvious, but this needs to be your original design—not someone else’s.

Q: If I win, will the print on the skirt be exactly like my winning design?
A: Your design will be an inspiration, that we will interpret on the print, so it won’t be exactly the same.

Q: Do I get the skirt if I win?
A: You can purchase the skirt with the gift certificate you receive; however, we can’t guarantee that the skirt will be in stock or available. (Your winning design will be so awesome, it will probably fly off the shelves!)

Q: What if I don’t have social media?
A: To enter the contest, you must have a personal Instagram or Twitter account and an email address.

Why do you have to be living on the U.S.? So disappointed, saw the comp on instagram, created a design only to now see U.S. only 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

Hannah, due to international gambling laws, we can only accept entries from the US 50 states and DC at this time. So sorry about this! We would love it if all ModCloth fans regardless of location could participate.

Is the contest open to residents of Canada or anywhere else in the world or just the US?

    • Helen Lee 10/16/2017 at 2:09 pm #

Oh no – I am so sorry about this. Yes – we can only accept entries from the US and DC at this time due to international gambling laws.

Sad Canadian here. You guys don’t seem to like us.

    • Helen Lee 10/16/2017 at 2:10 pm #

OH no Kaitlyn! We LOVE our neighbors to the north. Unfortunately due to the way contest laws are set up, we can only accept entries from the 50 US states and DC. One day I hope we can open it up to everyone everywhere for a chance to win.

So can you just clarify for me, the designer will sign over all rights to you, and you have permission to not only not use use their original design but use it as inspiration for your own designs?

  5. Jen 10/11/2017 at 7:27 pm #

Hi. Could you please clarify the terms of this contest? Will the designer forego all the rights to their pattern if they win? Are you going to promote the winning designer or will the design be considered Modcloth’s design. Can Modcloth use ANY design entered into the contest in any way they see fit? This seems a little extreme if that is the case. I would like to enter, but take the rights to my artwork very seriously. Thank you.

Can you summit via Facebook. I don’t have an instagram for safety reasons but I really want to enter in.

  7. Loni Lopez 10/13/2017 at 8:36 pm #

Can a single individual share more than one design?

    • Helen Lee 10/16/2017 at 2:12 pm #

Hi Morgan, only Instagram and Twitter at this time. But we will look into Facebook for the next one! Best, Helen

    • Helen Lee 10/16/2017 at 2:17 pm #

Hey Loni – absolutely you can share as many as you would like, but only the very FIRST entry will be considered for selection. Good luck! Thanks, Helen

I agree with Jen & Gillian. It seems as if ModCloth is “fishing” for great ideas to use without paying the designer/artist fee. This campaign sounds fun but still like a ripoff. I am hesitant to offer my idea because I may not win but my work is out there possibly making them money. They do state that: “Your design will be an inspiration, that we will interpret on the print, so it won’t be exactly the same.” I don’t want to give away good inspiration without decent compensation. This may be totally innocent, but once you see something you can’t unsee it. They are definitely going to get plenty of inspiration!

Is it okay if we submit more than one design? Or will that result in disqualification? I already did this…should I delete one??

    • Helen Lee 10/16/2017 at 2:13 pm #

Great question – you can absolutely submit more than one design, but only your first entry will be considered for selection. All the other entries will not be counted. Thanks!
