Take the Lead Contest! – UPDATE: Contest is Closed!

Pin on PinterestTweet about this on TwitterEmail this to someoneShare on FacebookShare on Tumblr

Show us your fantasy lead singer style in this rockin’ contest! From now until Friday, March 11, you could win a $100 ModCloth gift certificate with your Polyvore lead singer style set. Catherine of our new favorite band, Young Galaxy, will be selecting a winning look. Not only will the winner receive a gift certificate, but also a copy of Young Galaxy’s latest album, Shapeshifting! Use our Polyvore Mini Editor below to build an outfit that makes you “take the lead.”

In our recent interview with lead singer Catherine, she said that “fashion helps interpret the fantasy inherent in music, helps nudge you into a place of suspended disbelief, so it feels like a surreal waking dream.”

Before you get into the garment groove, here’s some vital info to remember:

  • You must have a Polyvore account to participate. It’s easy and free to sign up. If you’ve never made a styleboard, see Polyvore’s tips on making a rockin’ set.
  • Only one entry per person will be accepted.
  • Sets submitted after the deadline will not be considered. The deadline is Friday, March 11, 11:59 p.m. EST.
  • You must include at least three ModCloth items in your set.
  • Save your finished set, which will be automatically added to our “Take the Lead” gallery on Polyvore. If you want to view your set, just click the “Gallery” tab in the Mini Editor below. If you want to edit your set, you can open it up on the Polyvore website.
  • If you choose to create your set on the Polyvore website instead of using the Mini Editor, then post a link to your set in the blog comments section below!
  • Entries will be judged based on the following: adherence to the above guidelines, creativity, and relevancy to rock star style.

Using the Mini Editor:

The Polyvore Mini Editor below has a closet full of ModCloth items that you can use to create your lead singer look. If you want to add ModCloth items that are not featured in this closet or non-ModCloth items to your set, you must save your set here and complete it on the Polyvore website.

Let us know what you’re listening to while you’re building your set!

UPDATE (3/11, 11:59 p.m.)
: The Take the Lead Contest is now closed, and any entries submitted after this point will not be considered. Stay tuned to see who Catherine picks to be the winner!

I’m new to Polyvore so I don’t know how or if my submission was submitted. This is a really cool site. Thanks

  2. Katie 03/04/2011 at 6:00 pm #

I can’t figure out how to get my polyvore set into this gallery. Here’s the link!

I was inspired by Catherine’s comment that the stage is “suspended disbelief” – which was a term coined by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This made me think of Rime of the Ancient Mariner and thus, a rocker, whimsical, nautical look was born.

  3. Leslie 03/04/2011 at 6:11 pm #

i couldn’t figure out how to get my set into the gallery either so here is my link as well!

This is something i would personally wear if were on stage 🙂

  4. Leah 03/04/2011 at 6:56 pm #

    I made one!: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=28964158

  5. Kim 03/04/2011 at 6:56 pm #

I apologize if this question has been answered elsewhere, but can people from outside the U.S. enter the contest? (I’m in Canada.)

    Here is my set!!

  7. Grace 03/04/2011 at 7:34 pm #

Wasn’t sure where to put it after I finished it, so here’s my link also.

http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=28965627 (My contest entry – hopefully the link works).

I have never heard of polyvore before. Its a really neat site.

  9. Brooke 03/04/2011 at 7:38 pm #

Same as Katie! I couldn’t figure out how to do it so I’m putting the link here: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=28964406

I tried to go colorful and fun but still glam-rock-ish!

  10. Sarah 03/04/2011 at 7:39 pm #

I was thinking about a hardcore rocker chick that just wanted to have fun and play her music.

  11. Anna 03/04/2011 at 7:41 pm #

I also couldn’t figure out exactly how to set the gallery so here is a link to the items I’ve chosen.

I wanted to keep Catherine’s comfort in mind above all else. I chose something she could wear on stage that was fashionable yet easy to move in. The accessories I chose would be complementing yet not distracting. They also would not get in the way during her performance.

It’s an outfit that is simple and classic but still has that indie flare.

  12. Cassie 03/04/2011 at 7:56 pm #

For me this is rockstar while still being feminine and thats pretty much the best of both worlds!! 🙂

  13. Kaylee 03/04/2011 at 8:18 pm #

    A cute bad ass 😉
Barracuda by Heart was the main inspiration.

  18. Andrea 03/04/2011 at 9:00 pm #

    Here’s my entry!

Collected the clothes while listening to Florence + The Machine. This is definitely what I would wear should I rock out on stage. 🙂

  19. Dani 03/04/2011 at 9:05 pm #

To me it’s all about being bad-ass, but with super feminine details… Rocker but still girly… leather and lace, pink and black! 🙂

  20. Kate 03/04/2011 at 9:19 pm #

here’s my set! I wanted to mix slightly feminine things with rougher things–I think this would just be a lot of fun to wear and jump around in.

    This is my set:

I listened to Edwarde Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros while making it.

  25. Sydney 03/05/2011 at 12:18 am #

A little vintage, a little red, a lotta fun. Hope you like! 🙂

  26. Audrey Hamelin 03/05/2011 at 12:35 am #

This my lead singer dream style!
It has an 80’s flashback but with a modern twist. New wave was sort of the inspiration as well as Debbie Harry from Blondie. I hope you Enjoy it 🙂 http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=28976097

    Fun contest!

  32. Allyse 03/05/2011 at 3:05 am #

Oh thank goodness, I’m not the only one having issues with my outfit being posted.

  33. Amy 03/05/2011 at 3:30 am #

This is my choice–perhaps my idea of a rockstar is different from the general idea. My idea of a singer is Zooey Deschanel (She & Him), so I took inspiration from her.

  34. jen 03/05/2011 at 4:17 am #

    This was way too fun!

  35. Jessica A 03/05/2011 at 8:40 am #

My inspiration was an indie rock chick who wanted to be comfortable on stage, but still look like she could kick your ass and then sing a song about it.

  36. Amanda 03/05/2011 at 9:17 am #

So yeah, definitely my first time using polyvore. Hope I didn’t mess up, here’s my set! As much as I love the IDEA of loud and glam, this is much more suited to what I would wear, comfort-wise.

  37. Cassandra 03/05/2011 at 9:28 am #

I forgot how much I love Polyvore! Such a fun contest. I was listening to Serena Ryder while making my set. I was going for a Stevie Nicks, rocker, folksy look.

While i was making this, i thought of people like Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, I also was listening to Flyleaf while making this. It was nice to get the college making skills out again.

  43. Bluus 03/05/2011 at 12:01 pm #

    Gave it a shot!

And here’s my contribution to Take the Lead… http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=28994730

Gooooooo Canadian Indie music! Obviously you’d want to add a giant sweater and mitts for the dash from the van to the venue for the show. Well, in Canada anyway. Not you, Vancouver. You’d get an umbrella.

  46. Jessica 03/05/2011 at 2:32 pm #

Elton John and The Hush Sound inspired. Hope you love it:)

  47. Emily 03/05/2011 at 2:38 pm #

That is my style board! I would personally wear this on stage if I were a rock singer!!!

  48. Ashley 03/05/2011 at 3:14 pm #

I was listening to The Morning Benders album The Bedroom Covers while making my set!

  50. Julie 03/05/2011 at 4:15 pm #

  51. Meghan 03/05/2011 at 4:18 pm #

  52. Victoria 03/05/2011 at 4:46 pm #

I wanted to do something inspired by Catherine’s quote, the band name, performing music… I wanted it to be glittering, sparkling, and otherwordly… kind of like going to a really great, intimate concert and just looking up and feeling surrendered to the lights and sounds.

  53. Lisa 03/05/2011 at 8:05 pm #

    Here is my set:

  54. Spencer S 03/05/2011 at 8:49 pm #

I think this would stand out on stage and allow you to be seen while still giving away the “rock goddess” persona.

  55. Yasemin 03/05/2011 at 10:04 pm #

Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was my inspiration.

  56. Katherine 03/05/2011 at 10:29 pm #

sweet femininity meets edgy with a vintage vibe my kind of rocker

  57. ♥Flora♥ 03/05/2011 at 10:54 pm #

  58. Maddison 03/06/2011 at 2:35 am #

    Hey, here’s my entry!

I based a lot of it on my music choices, but also the theme of reflection, having all eyes on you and wanting to look and feel great as a result.

  63. Emily 03/06/2011 at 11:23 am #

Young Galaxy made me think of a space-age rocker, so my outfit is David Bowie meets Judy Jetson: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=29033929

This is my submission; I tried to balance the edginess of the rock with the femininity of the singer which is why I added the headband and the lace tights 🙂 Good luck all!

  68. Brittan-Morgan 03/06/2011 at 1:52 pm #

I wanted something super pretty and girly to to make you feel strong, edgy, and chic. This is what I would wear on stage:

  70. Holly 03/06/2011 at 3:04 pm #

Here is my look- channeling the Rock Gods of the 70s-80s. Contemporaries with Young Galaxy’s influence David Bowie, my heroes have an abundance of hair- and style to match.

  71. Ashley K 03/06/2011 at 3:16 pm #

I love stage looks with black leather and amazing instruments, the music really speaks for itself with great bands like Young Galaxy, so I went pretty simple on this ensemble:

I was actually listening to “Lark (Ruff and Jam remix)” by Au Revoir Simone while creating this set!

  72. Erikka 03/06/2011 at 3:50 pm #

This was a good one. Challenging that there could be SO MANY different combination’s!

I’m going to New York City in April on an invitation to sing at the Lincoln Center. It’s been a dream of mine to even visit the city, let alone sing there. That’s what inspired this outfit. The only genre of music I really listen to is indie rock. I could definitely see some of those funky, hip girls wearing these pieces too. This would be my dream outfit for my trip.

I’ve put my polyvore set on ModCloth yesterday, but I went in Polyvore today and edited it so much to where I like it better! My problem is that when I tried to click ‘publish’ on Polyvore it should have saved the new edited copy on ModCloth, right? I didn’t so I’m not sure what to do about that…it says one entry per person so I’m wondering if it will show up later after I refresh or logout/back in. Any help would be so much appreciated! Thank you!

I would totally wear this on stage if I was a singer, which im not considering that would actually require me being able to carry a tune, which i can’t! So I have to content myself with creating polyvore sets and drooling over modcloth items 🙂
My inspirational music was Mirrors by Natalia Kills one of my new favourite artists!

http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=29074261&.locale=es I made it while I was listening to She and Him, so my singer is an indie folk one, who loves vintage but likes mixing it with modern pieces to create an eclectic yet sweet look. She is not afraid of using colors and mixing patterns for the stage and her everyday life.

  110. Em 03/08/2011 at 1:58 am #

Well, I was listening to a mix of country, rock, bluegrass and blues.
When designing these, I wanted them to be fun and indie, with a light-hearted twist.
I had to include two outfits. Why? I guess it’s because we all have to compete with Taylor Swift’s wardrobe 🙂

I’ve included a summary of the outfit, kind of a story behind the look.
A combination of ModCloth beauties and Polyvore finds, I could totally picture Catherine up on stage in this pretty little thing.

    Here’s my entry:
I was listening to Metric; albums “Fantasies”, “Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?”, and “Grow Up and Blow Away”. Their music has a hypnotic feel with a hard, rough edge that keeps your head bobbing and your hips swaying. If I could be a famous singer, I’d aim to make music like that and dress like my polyvore… all the time.

  121. Cindy 03/09/2011 at 3:56 am #

  123. Tarren Pearson 03/09/2011 at 4:22 am #

This rock star worthy ensemble is rad. Why? Well other than the fact that I was listening to Queen’s Greatest Hits and Rob Zombie while piecing it together; because I own 80% of the items in this outfit! I actually wore those irregular choice heels to a Rob Zombie Concert last month and it was amazing!

  124. Tegan 03/09/2011 at 7:01 am #

Had lots of fun making this outfit combination 🙂

  125. Faith80 03/09/2011 at 9:02 am #

I was listening to Over The Rhine “Ohio” while creating my rockstar look.

I was listening to 80s music and current stuff that sounds like 80s. So lots of Chromeo, Grum, Duran Duran and Madonna 🙂

  131. olivia 03/09/2011 at 7:59 pm #

http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=29156215 is mine. Made while listening to We Have Everything… it’s actually my favorite Young Galaxy song! It seems most like a colorful bird to me, so that’s how I made the outfit: bright, flowy, and comfortable in its own feathers.

Hope we don’t get discounted, it wasn’t clear how to join the Gallery.

  132. Gwendy 03/10/2011 at 2:14 am #

    I made one too ^^

    I was listening I got you 🙂

I had a blast rummaging through the Modcloth inventory while rocking out to “Dance With Me” by The Sounds. Maja Ivarsson is one fashionable leading lady.

Since everyone else seems to be posting their set links here, I shall do the same. Here’s my entry: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=29195372

My look was inspired by the overall vibe I felt when listening to Young Galaxy’s music: an edgy sound with a bit of something unexpected and feminine.

  163. Emily 03/11/2011 at 12:09 am #

    Here’s my set! :

I had sooo much fun making this!!!! Good luck all!

  164. Katrina 03/11/2011 at 12:09 am #

    Here’s my look
I love the femininity that lace and vintage clothes possess and the way it can be dressed up or down for different situations. This look is inspired by Sarah Blasko who creates beautiful and delicate music but with strong lyrics and heart behind it (hence I’ve added the killer leather jacket and stand out boots for a bolder stage presence).

  165. Cheryl 03/11/2011 at 12:10 am #

    Here’s my set 🙂

  166. Corinna 03/11/2011 at 12:10 am #

Here’s my Take the Lead outfit:
I was listening to Miike Snow’s “Animal” while creating the outfit. Enjoy!

  167. Liz 03/11/2011 at 12:11 am #

I chose items that exuded a definite rock and roll feel with leather pieces but kept it classy with a semi-long hem! My words of inspiration were Edgy, Classy, Fierce!

  172. Mary 03/11/2011 at 12:49 am #

Listening to The Beatles in my head.

  173. Gemma 03/11/2011 at 12:50 am #

That was so much fun! 😀
Went for a polished look that had a few quirky additions and a slight edge~ “Polished” by Yukihime is mine 🙂

  174. Missa 03/11/2011 at 12:54 am #

Personally wasn’t inspired by a lead singer in a rock band but when I think of a lady rocker I imagine them wearing something like this. Sadly, I was not listening to music while making this outfit, if I was I would probably be listening to Local Natives or Thao.

  175. Maya 03/11/2011 at 12:54 am #

As much as I love an over the top
“Glam Ziggy Stardust” look, I was a bit docile when putting this piece together, and It’s more of a “Norah Jones Folky” look, but I really like it. I think it’s trendy.

  176. Ducky 03/11/2011 at 1:02 am #

My apologies if two very similar comments by me are posted, I hadn’t read the official guidelines and was slightly paniced when I didn’t see my first comment right away:)

I figure that if you’re rocking out on stage you really cant have too many accessories. I went with a mostly monotone scheme, with a punch of red lipstick. Classic. Oh, and I was listening to Snow Patrol when I made this. 😉

    • Kayla 03/13/2011 at 12:02 am #

cant have too many, as in, you cant have enough. haha thought I’d clarify that. 🙂 Also, I was thinking of a more indie, local, rocker look I suppose. Pretty simple, but comfy enough to rock out completely.

  242. Muza 03/11/2011 at 6:28 pm #

My set is a mixture of rock and sweetness because I was listening to Young Galaxy and her voice was really serene and sweet, that’s why I called it “Sweetshifting” (a title adaptation from their song, “Shapeshifting”.) If Catherine wore this, it would be reflecting her personality while she was performing. 🙂

Worked all day on this, I hope you like it!

  243. Hannah 03/11/2011 at 6:29 pm #

A little comfy, a little classy, a little vintage. Inspired by my favorite performer because he truly puts on a good show by just being himself. 🙂 Enjoy!

It’s always empowering to see young women in rock and I admire those with the bravery to do it. I included Patti Smith’s new book because not only is she an influential rocker but also a wonderful activist. She is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is a winner of the National Book Award.

I thought this look could be a fun look t twirl around in stage in while still feeling like a comfy badass :). I now have this dress and I definitely plan on rocking this look either to school or a fun concert.

Eeee! I’m so excited, just created my entry! I started with the mini editor, saved and then edited on Polyvore. Just in case though, here is my link: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=29223601

I have horrible stage fright, but i would be confident enough to take the lead in this outfit.

  264. Mandi 03/11/2011 at 11:10 pm #

I really wanted something dramatic, so I took a longer dress, and added some accessories from my favorite gals like tarina, and betsy to create a look that I thought any fierce girl would wear on stage if she wanted to make an impact.

Whilst making this I listened to Samantha and Above & Beyond.

Listening to Florence and the Machine while making my set! I was inspired by her flowing, etheral feel fit for a lounging greek goddess. A bit of indie rock accents helped tie in a rockin’ outfit! 🙂

    There’s my set!

Here is my entry… roughly twenty seconds prior to the deadline.

Spent the evening rocking out with Be Your Own Pet. 🙂

As the rules were “Only one entry per person will be accepted”, a lot of people used one entry and made more than one option of looks. I believe these entries shouldn’t be valid, ’cause it’s not really fair to have more than one chance, they’re breaking the rules.

    • Emily 03/12/2011 at 6:41 pm #

      I agree!

    • Theodora 03/13/2011 at 7:36 pm #

i agree! i was wondering the same thing myself. i feel bad because those people worked hard on their sets, but if you didn’t get the directions right for any reason, you really can’t say you wholly participated in the contest in the first place!

    • Victoria 03/13/2011 at 7:51 pm #

I have to agree as well. The directions were to create a single outfit:

Use our Polyvore Mini Editor below to build an outfit that makes you “take the lead.”

    • Irene 03/13/2011 at 10:06 pm #

I also agree with this. Having multiple outfits in one entry is basically equivalent to entering multiple times. The people who did do this should either be disqualified for not playing by the rules, or should be made to choose one of the sets they created.

    • Theodora 03/13/2011 at 10:34 pm #

      @ Irene,

I too believe people who inserted multiple sets into their entries should be disqualified, or forced to pick only one. What I don’t like about this second option is that they are being given more time to work on their set, then the people who followed the directions properly the first time.

  274. Victoria 03/13/2011 at 10:45 pm #

I agree, Theodora, and I LOVE your name!

    • Victoria 03/13/2011 at 10:46 pm #

This was supposed to go after Theodora’s comment on mel’s comment. Oopsie =].

    • Theodora 03/14/2011 at 9:36 pm #

      Thank-you! Yours is nice too.

  275. Linzy 03/15/2011 at 8:49 pm #
