Our Style Shorts contest has drawn to a close, and wow – what an exciting journey it has been! As always, the creativity and general awesomeness of each and every submission truly blew us away.

We loved user ydelledelle’s charming stop motion short, set to the cadence of a friendly Jack Russel’s bark; Elaine Simeon’s stylish cake baking narrative; Kenna Nelson’s ModCloth-inspired acoustic tune; and user yooncha94’s unique paper doll animation, among so many other amazing videos!

Deciding on our top three favorites was incredibly difficult. After we posted our picks, right here on the ModCloth Blog, our lovely readers were given the opportunity to vote for their favorite Style Short.

Below, please enjoy the winning ModCloth Style Short, “It’s About…,” by Tamara Bowers. Tamara’s hard work and innovation earned her a $500 ModCloth gift card. Congrats, Tamara, and happy shopping!

Since this was our first video-based contest, we’d love to hear your feedback in the comments below. Please keep in mind that the contest winner, as well as other contest participants, will be reading your responses.

Keep your eye on the ModCloth Blog for future exciting contest announcements!

wow. you guys… wow. you didn’t listen to anybody’s feedback AT ALL. the winner? she cheated to get first place! congrats to the other two videos! you get a laptop bag!!

  2. sosad 08/11/2010 at 11:46 am #

Will not be shopping here again.

I’m a friend of the second video (spread happy) and they worked really hard. I didn’t think that you would let cheaters win; but I guess you did.

  3. agree 08/11/2010 at 11:50 am #

I hope the creators of the top 3 videos get to read this:

All of your videos were really cute and spectacularly made. You all deserved to win, and I hope ModCloth will really reconsider just giving one person the top place. Modcloth should be about more than just one way of expressing themselves. All 3 should win

  4. Ashlyn 08/11/2010 at 12:04 pm #

Wow! I’m glad this contest is over! Very stressful indeed, I still keep mulling over how different the outcome could have been

  5. upset 08/11/2010 at 12:07 pm #

This is upsetting. When it really comes down to it, the “popular girl’ won; because of her friends who were willing to refresh and click. The videos that actually reflected the Modcloth Brand recieved nothing but wasted time and hurt feelings.

  6. Jenna Banks 08/11/2010 at 12:09 pm #

As an Advertiser, I recommend to the other two videos that resided in the ‘Top 3’ to take down their Style Shorts right now and sell them back to ModCloth. Any agency would pay 500+ for ‘Spread Happy’ or ‘Fairy Dust’

  7. Jenna Banks 08/11/2010 at 12:11 pm #

    please stop screening comments!

everyone is entitled to their opinion, and i think—as long as they convey it in a non-profanity-laden manner— then they should be permitted to be read.

please do not delete this comment.

  8. Amanda 08/11/2010 at 1:17 pm #

Congrats Tamara! You’re the best 🙂

  9. Jerry 08/11/2010 at 1:30 pm #

Everyone voted more than once in an unsportsmanlike manner. Don’t be upset just because you couldn’t keep up with her. What happened happened.

If I were modcloth, I just wouldn’t hold polls anymore.

    Everyone won. Congrats to all!

  10. um 08/11/2010 at 1:34 pm #

To jerry: everyone didn’t win. only one person got 500 dollars. i feel bad for the other two people

  11. Dissapointed 08/11/2010 at 1:36 pm #

And, even now, ModCloth or Susan Kroger still haven’t responded to these comments.

  12. Sara 08/11/2010 at 2:07 pm #

    What a disappointment!

  13. Hannah Godfrie 08/11/2010 at 2:20 pm #

Like I said before, I think 1st place should get 500 dollars, 2nd place should get 400 dollars, and 3rd place should get 300 dollars. That’s the right thing to do

  14. Yes 08/11/2010 at 2:29 pm #

    Congrats, Its about
    Your video was awsome.

  15. Sarah 08/11/2010 at 2:51 pm #

I think ModCloth shouldn’t use a poll service like that next time. So they should either decide the winner themselves, or some other way of voting. Mostly because the point of the contest and the voting was to get the contestants to send it to everyone they know, and tweet, facebook, blog, vlog, crowdsource, etc to get the videos out. Some of the teams may have done that much more than others and still did not win. This was because PollDaddy allows people to vote over and over again, thus eliminating the point of the contest in the first place.

  16. Catherine 08/11/2010 at 2:55 pm #

At the very least, it would be nice in future poll contests to clarify whether repeat voting is allowed and part of the contest, or whether it is considered cheating. The lack of clarity on this point led to a lot of negative responses and accusations, which turned the contest into a source of stress and hurt feelings.

In this case, it seems that it would have made more sense to allow only a single vote per person, since that would mean the winner was the one that the most people thought was best, rather than the one that the most people were willing to spend hours clicking to support. It would also encourage the participants to get as many new people as possible exposed to the videos and thus to the Modcloth brand. That seems more fair AND more in line with the marketing goals of the company.

  17. GetaLife 08/11/2010 at 3:08 pm #

Really people… Are we going to continue to talk about how it was so unfair… As our human nature seems to always work we only care about the money but act as though it was the “cause” that we did it for. I have read these comments and I am shocked how all these lovers of Modcloth act like they will never shop at this site again because one person got more votes and yes sent it out to all the internet places they could and email. But those that did not win can only say it was because of “cheating”.

  18. Common sense 08/11/2010 at 3:18 pm #

to accuse others of cheating while doing the same exact thing yourselves is just silly.
No where on the website did it say vote just once. if you voted again all it said was thank you we have already counted your vote. It did not say, do not vote again. So voting for your favorite as many times as possible was apparently part of the process.
Three good submisions and some one had to win and someone had to lose..

  19. Yes 08/11/2010 at 3:23 pm #

I saw It’s About on Facebook and loved it.

susan gregg koger.. i envy your life. “it’s about”…. not so much.

  21. ModCloth 08/11/2010 at 3:32 pm #

    Hi, Everyone!

Thank you, again, to all who participated in this video contest — it was our first one, and we wanted it to be special. We thought all of the videos were amazing, and they all made us proud and happy. We’re so fortunate to have such a talented group of customers like you!

However, we’re really sad that there has been so much negativity. Please let us clear up any confusion — we did not find any validity to the accusation of cheating, and we’re disappointed if it caused any hurt feelings. Matching IP addresses were allowed in this contest in order for the three finalists to get their schoolmates and office-mates (who often share the same IP address) involved, and we felt that it was unfair to limit that voting access by making it one vote per IP address. Additionally, please understand that we only delete comments that are inappropriate or hurtful to others.

We think that is one to the coolest, most creative contests we’ve had yet, and we really wanted to give you a say in who would win. Since you’re not pleased with the outcome, we will certainly take all of your feedback into consideration for next time.

Thank you for being so concerned, and thank you for all of your suggestions! We truly appreciate them.

  22. April T 08/11/2010 at 3:50 pm #

Congrats Tamara I am glad you won. I would have to agree with what Common sense and GetaLife said.

  23. Angie 08/11/2010 at 7:05 pm #

There are too many comments about “cheating and unfair.” I agree with common sense. You can’t tell me the people that made the other two videos did not ask their friends, family and friends friends to vote for them. Congrats Tamara! Don’t listen to the negative, because they don’t know any better. ModCloth, you are still classy 🙂

  24. last time 08/11/2010 at 8:25 pm #

ModCloth is not classy. despite questions about the poll and whether or not we could vote multiple times, there were no clarifications untill after the poll’s end. whatever.

  25. moxie 08/12/2010 at 1:51 pm #

That was a sad attempt at an explanation modcloth. You fail.

  26. Elle 08/12/2010 at 5:49 pm #

Spread Happy was the best by a long shot, sorry. They were all good videos but the amount of work put into Spread Happy must have been a lot, and they deserve better than a laptop bag, all of them do. I agree with Moxie. Modcloth, you failed, hard.

  27. f 08/12/2010 at 6:52 pm #

I thought all of the videos were cute. Having said that, I thought Spread Happy was the most imaginative, stylish, and inspiring.

Props to that quality production. 🙂

  28. Cynthia 08/12/2010 at 8:49 pm #

Shame on ModCloth for their lack of understanding for the hard work put into all 3 shorts. This will not be forgotten. good lucky on your future contests, considering your now-marred reputation for fairness. YAY FOR ALL THOSE WHO GOT A LAPTOP BAG…. you deserve more.

  29. Caity 08/12/2010 at 10:21 pm #

I was going to enter this contest… but the second I saw that the winner would be determined by votes, I decided not to waste my time. I am a huge fan of ModCloth and admire Susan’s entrepreneurial success.

I have read all the comments blasting the ModCloth team and agree that they should have clarified if an ip address could be used more than once a day…..but for the most part, I think that the entrants need to take some responsibility as well. You knew that the winner would be determined by votes…. Did you really think that people would vote ONCE a day for the entry they thought was best? Every single voting contest I have ever seen online has always been awarded to whoever could get the most votes by any means necessary. Each entrant obviously had people voting for them more than once, it wasn’t a question of who cheated but who cheated best.

This contest was created in good nature and really shouldn’t be received with so much negativity. It is what it is. The winning video was beautiful and very well shot and deserved to win just as much as the other entries. This contest produced some really inspirational artistic videos that were really fun to watch. If you didn’t win…. suck it up and be sure to know what your getting into next time you enter a contest like this.

Hopefully the ModCloth team will create another video contest in the future… but here is my input if they do.

1)The ModCloth team should choose the winner. ModCloth is such a unique, artsy and creative company…. and I can’t think of a better group to judge a video contest.

    2) If you are going to have a voting component, make it only a fraction of the deciding factor. For example: Creativity 60%, Composition 30%, Public voting 10%. This way you get your readers involved but still keep the contest neutral.

    3) I think it is awesome that you have runner up prizes, It would be great if you could offer them again.

I hope no one takes offense to what I have written, I know when you put a lot of effort into something it can sometimes be very draining emotionally, especially for things like this. I have had very similar video contest experiences in the past and have been crushed when voting is involved.

To the runner ups…. your videos were beautiful and you both got really nice prizes as well. Thanks for sharing your awesome videos.

  30. aida 08/13/2010 at 12:23 am #

Modcloth. Redeem yourself. Give the other two a better prize. Please. I am being sincere. I can feel how hard those girls worked and I just feel really sad about this. It really bothers me, I dont know why, but maybe I’ve watched this happen too many times, where the people who deserve more get nothing. But you can break the cycle! 🙂 Please listen to us and instead of neutral rebuttals, listen to the overwhelming majority and give ALL THREE a fair reward for their creativity.

  31. Drew 08/13/2010 at 12:27 am #

“Matching IP addresses were allowed in this contest ”

well thanks for telling us while the contest was still happening. oh wait. you didn’t. so videos like spread happy thought they were doing the right thing by not voting repeatedly, they though they would be rewarded for not “cheating” but instead they got nothing (and neither did the fairy video) except a laptop bag. Really?!?!

you could have at least given them a voucher for a free dress under 80 dollars or something…

  32. Yimenez 08/13/2010 at 12:29 am #

come on m0dcl0th. you really want to tell us that you thought 600+ votes from the same IP number were really each a separate person? please…

  33. becca boo 08/13/2010 at 1:49 am #

No one forced anyone to make these videos. Wasn’t it supposed to fun and spark your creativity, and the 500 dollars was just a bonus? Wheres the joy in feeling pride for being picked and having your video watched by many of your peers? Real artists don’t create for the money but for the passion. How disappointing.

  34. katie 08/13/2010 at 7:34 am #

i can’t believe how nasty everyone has gotten over this. modcloth isn’t about a ‘mean girls’ attitude and i didn’t think we were either! it’s not their fault that people got friends and coworkers to vote for them! in fact… why on earth didn’t the other contestants? i think modcloth did a great job of choosing the top 3, and, in their usual domocratic style (like, um, be the buyer? hello!), they allowed us to make the final decision. if it was swayed by one person’s friends, so be it, but everybody else should have done that too! there are even websites that are devoted to stuff like this where you win contests by advertising yourself, basically. heck, i’m pretty sure that’s how ijustine even has a career! my point is – it’s not their fault, and how rude and cruel would it be at this point for them to call up the winner and say, ‘hey, we had to reconsider. you are not the winner after all. sorry’? pretty bad. i think all 3 videos were amazing, and the prizes were clearly stated from day one!

  35. Jules 08/13/2010 at 8:22 am #

Nobody is saying to take the prize away from the winner. What everyone is saying is that the other two finalists deserve more than a laptop bag.

Modcloth did not tell us that we were allowed to vote more than one time from the same IP Number, so I think videos like spread happy though they were doing the right thing not repeatedly voting

And, though the prizes were clearly stated, they become null and void when voting took a complete 360 towards unfair.

It seems odd that the video that won the first prize has the least amount of views on youtube out of all the other videos. Makes you think.

  36. Inigta 08/13/2010 at 8:26 am #

i agree with that other commenter! 500 for first, 400 for second prize, 300 for third prize!

modcloth, you made a mistake, and thats okay. it was your first contest, and i think everybody understands that. but there’s no excuse for not listening to us now as we request for fair treatment of all the winners

lets be honest the video that won first place was not really picked by modcloth-ers at all.

  37. Molly 08/13/2010 at 8:29 am #

    To Katie:
“it’s not their fault that people got friends and coworkers to vote for them! in fact… why on earth didn’t the other contestants?”

Nobody was told that repeat voting wasn’t considered cheating. That’s why I believe people are so upset. They thought they were doing the right thing by not voting over and over.

It isn’t right. And Modcloth needs to step up, suck it up, and listen to these comments and reward all three.

  38. jill 08/13/2010 at 8:31 am #

by no means is anybody saying that we should take away Tamara’s prize! everybody is just saying that the other two deserve more than what they got considering the way the contest turned into more of a popularity contest than a genuine vote

  39. Van 08/13/2010 at 8:40 am #

“Real artists don’t create for the money but for the passion. How disappointing.”

Actually, I’m pretty sure most people created those videos for the money. Sorry to burst any bubble you have about artists. Truthfully, out of all groups of urban people, artists are probably one of the most in need of money. Irony much?

  40. Van 08/13/2010 at 8:41 am #

“there are even websites that are devoted to stuff like this where you win contests by advertising yourself”

well there’s a genuine and honest way of winning

  41. Ashlyn 08/13/2010 at 12:41 pm #

oh well. I just wish it that Modcloth had told everyone sooner that sharing IP numbers was allowed. That way, everyone would have a fair chance and not hold back. Who knows how the contest would have turned out if it was made known to all that voting repeatedly would not result in disciplinary action?

  42. Gina 08/13/2010 at 1:14 pm #

“it’s not their fault that people got friends and coworkers to vote for them! in fact… why on earth didn’t the other contestants?”

because they didn’t know it wasn’t considered cheating! modcloth didn’t tell them untill after the contest!

  43. Felicia 08/13/2010 at 1:16 pm #

ModCloth, please fix this. Please do the right thing and give all three a fair prize. We’re not asking you to take away Tamara’s 500 dollars—just to give the other two finalists a fair reward as well. Please post this comment.

  44. Tianna 08/13/2010 at 1:20 pm #

“Wasn’t it supposed to fun and spark your creativity, and the 500 dollars was just a bonus?”

i’m pretty sure the large majority did this contest with the 500 dollar incentive in mind.

“Wheres the joy in feeling pride for being picked and having your video watched by many of your peers?”

i think the joy dissapeared when those people who made those vieos watched themselves lose to rapid click-votes from the same IP number

“Real artists don’t create for the money but for the passion.”

actually, real artists use their talent and passion for their personal expression as well as for their personal gain; which, in this case, was to win perhaps 500 dollars.

  45. wendy michellas 08/13/2010 at 1:22 pm #

modcloth! look at you! you’re acting like a spoiled child who doesn’t want to share after making a mistake! people are requesting you to be fair! please reward the other two with something better than a laptop bag!

  46. regina junnah 08/13/2010 at 1:30 pm #

please be fair modcloth. please give all 3 fair rewards

  47. samantha 08/13/2010 at 1:45 pm #

I think most of the people defending modcloth are either tamara (the person who made the “winning” video) or her coworker/friends… especially with their coment names like “getalife” and “suckitup”.

  48. hattie 08/13/2010 at 1:47 pm #

Thank you Modcloth, for posting all of these comments. Now all you have to do is LISTEN to them, and give all 3 videos a fair reward! Nobody is going to give up on this, untill you reward fairly! (yay for Spread Happy and Fairy Dust!)

  49. katie 08/13/2010 at 1:50 pm #

Woah! Those are alot of comments! I have to put in my input.

I personally was a fan of the winning video. I thought it was nice and genuine. However, at the same time, the voting did get quite skewed. Lets be honest and admit that the poll didn’t do what we wanted it to do. I tiddin’t reflect the true fan favorite.

Good for Tamara for winning, girl! But modcloth sould really give them all a better prize than what they got? A bookbag? Or something? How about a few pretty dresses?

  50. nenna 08/13/2010 at 1:53 pm #

modcloth, you shouldn’t take our feedback for next time. You should take our feedback for right now and you can still do the right thing! dont take away the first place winer’s prize, just give the others better ones!

  51. Annie 08/13/2010 at 5:54 pm #

    We’re waitingggg…..

  52. GetaLife 08/13/2010 at 6:01 pm #

Actually I think they should all get BlockBuster Bucks…. Blockbuster Bucks are cool!

  53. ModCloth 08/13/2010 at 6:43 pm #

    Hi, everyone!

We’ve read all your comments, and taken your concerns to heart. So, we contacted sistersalad and berrylover earlier today to award them $250 gift certificates in addition to their prizes.

We’re sorry this contest took such a negative turn, and will use your feedback as we plan our next batch of fun ModCloth contests.

Thanks so much, and have a fashionable weekend!

  54. Melissa 08/14/2010 at 12:34 am #

I take issue with the people posting these bitter comments. All three videos were quality entries. The claims of cheating seem unsubstantiated. I entered this contest too, and people saying that they were glad they didn’t enter, is kind of insulting. I put a lot of effort into my piece. It took a great deal of coordination and time. I entered because I want to be a film director. In fact, I start at a film college in a month. Though, I was displeased to see that Modcloth was factoring in views in choosing their favorites, it was still worth doing. As for accusing the winner, I think everyone needs to stop their moaning and groaning.

  55. katie 08/14/2010 at 7:51 am #

hear, hear, Melissa! and to Molly: i didn’t say anything about “repeat voting.” i just said they got their coworkers and friends to vote for them. you misconstrued what i said.

and to van: do you get good gas mileage? and, hey, i didn’t say that it was the most virtuous way to win. but it exists. this is the internet, so companies take advantage of stuff like that for advertising purposes. welcome to the world. everyone may not be as pure at heart as you, perhaps.

and to everyone that’s been complaining, how about posting something here now that thanks modcloth for doing exactly what you asked them to do?! or did you just want to complain, but then you don’t want to say, “thanks”? seems a little hypocritical!

i wish this hadn’t gotten so messy and silly, but hopefully we all learned a lesson, and the nest contest will go much smoother! kudos to modcloth for listening to your commenters, because a lot of companies would not do that!

  56. Van 08/14/2010 at 8:41 am #

Good job modcloth! thanks for listening!

  57. Tianna 08/14/2010 at 9:04 am #

  58. lianne 08/14/2010 at 11:15 am #

Thank you modcloth! It rocks that you listened to everyone! you proved yourself awesome!

  59. Common sense 08/14/2010 at 11:18 pm #

    Well done Madcloth.
now I say this with all the feeling I can.
I will continue posting negitive comments under a variety of names and hold my breath until I turn blue until you give me a gift certificate to.
    🙂 just kidding.

  60. Common sense 08/15/2010 at 1:43 am #

    sorry Modcloth
I am a terrible typer and I would never hold my breath until I turn blue. Maybe a lovely shade of lavender.

  61. Pleased 08/15/2010 at 7:06 pm #

It’s good to see most people are happy about ModCloth’s re-thinking of their prizes. I suppose there will always be a few negative “haters” that still want to stir up contention.

And, I think most people will view what ModCloth had done as an example of a large company listening to their customers, and respecting them. expect the benefits of karma, ModCloth! 🙂

  62. Amanda 08/18/2010 at 6:02 pm #

Um….Hmm. So this is the first chance I’ve had to actually watch the video and ah…I sort of think that was kind of dumb. Sorry :-/ I’m behind Modcloth 100% and all of that, but wow- all she did was wander around….Hrm……

  63. Katie Colleen 08/21/2010 at 7:42 pm #

I’m not going to lie. I am not the biggest fan of the video that took first, but I accept that she was the winner. As for all of you bashing her video that is quite rude, and very childish. Did any of you learn about sportsmanship in t-ball when you were 7? And as for you, Modcloth, I am still a huge fan. Clientele of Modcloth I am truly disappointed.
