Behind the Scenes: And Now, Over to ModCloth with Your Fashion Forecast…

As the weather in Pittsburgh changes from humid to “Where’s the heater?”, our wardrobe preferences also shift towards those of the warm and fuzzy variety. Our latest “Fashion Forecast” photo shoot fell seamlessly in line with the temperature transition, thanks to the set’s tactile props, which were just begging to be snuggled, and the infinitely fabulous array of ensembles that are sure to warm your stylish heart…

After the initial conceptualization, set construction began. Danielle, Natalie, and Eric created a uniquely chic textural vibe by attaching steel bars to the foggy grey walls, upon which reams of yarn were hung. We found Yarns Unlimited in Sewickley, Pa to have an ultra- fabulous collection, in addition to being extremely knowledgeable regarding their vast selection. Ultimately, the selected shades were violet, eggplant, burnished gold, ivory, and a mixed-hue skein.

The wonderful wardrobe Susan selected for this shoot, with the help of Vasil, consisted of a gorgeously bold, vibrant palette that created a feeling of being enveloped in warmth. Shades of raspberry, scarlet, rust, and teal abounded, while glimpses of plaid assured us that it’s one pleasing pattern that’s sticking around for seasons to come. And, oh the tights! Patterned, knit, wooly, and thick – they created a rich visual texture when contrasted against the sweater dresses, corduroy coats, and sleek shoes. Speaking of which…

For a shoe lover like myself, the Fall and Winter footwear collection is as close to heel heaven as it gets. Sandals are sticking around in the form of both strappy and peep-toe, while booties also had a strong showing, and a can’t-live-without-’em pair of cognac knee high boots stole my shoe-lovin’ heart. Impeccable details weren’t reserved just for clothing, and the various styles of heels and flats featured many forms of embellishment including cut-outs, studs, and bows.

The two adorable models had their hair and make-up done, then changed into their first outrageously gorgeous outfits. The first collection of clothing photographed featured the Queen Bee Earmuffs, Bande a Part Tunic in Raspberry, Longitude Tights in Dark Chocolate, the highly covetable Trailblazer Boots, and the much-loved Mod Goldenrod Glovettes. As things heated up on set, Susan stopped by to check out the shoot, and Winston sauntered in to oversee things and add his canine critique. That little pug muffin really knows what’s up in the world of fashion!

Now, I don’t know about you, but going into this photoshoot, I only had television and movie examples to go on. You know the usual media portrayal – austere models, a photographer shouting directions, and techno music pumping in the background. However, I am so proud and pleased to report that ModCloth’s models are absolute sweethearts! I had the pleasure of chatting with one of the lovely ladies, Cassie, about everything from school to where I got my tights. When the photo sesh for the first outfit wrapped up, Cassie was called on set, and she sweetly apologized for having to delay our conversation. What a doll! Then, she stepped behind the lights in her Jill Frost Knit Hat, Strike the Right Cord Coat, Channel Flannel Dress, Bloomfield Booties, Crazy Little Thing Called Glove, and Winter Prep Thigh Highs over Tights for Every Occasion in Lunch Date (one super cute look that’s a stroke of styling genius!), and rocked the shoot.

The photo studio’s soundtrack had everyone from the models to the ModStaffers grooving, and featured songs by a plethora of artists from MIA to Madonna. MGMT’s “Electric Feel” had everyone’s head bobbing, but when “Real Love” by Mary J. Blige came on, Danielle, photographer extraordinaire, exclaimed, “I love this song!”

Overall, the shoot was fun, fabulous, and fresh – just like our readers! The chosen shots were sent on to our graphic designers, who worked their magic to bring you the spectacular lookbook you see on ModCloth today. I hope you enjoyed this little behind-the-scenes peek into what a photoshoot is like when it’s done the Mod way!
