We love a good, fashionable celebration, so we partnered with cancer support organization Gilda’s Club to host a benefit runway show! The show, titled “Strut Your Strength,” featured Gilda’s Club members as models and was held in our Pittsburgh office, which an army of employee volunteers transformed into a glam runway and party space.
Gilda’s Club was started in the ’90s, in honor of comedian Gilda Radner, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986. Radner saw the need for a space where people diagnosed with cancer could come together and support one another. After Gilda passed away, her friends and family fulfilled her wish by creating Gilda’s Club — which now has 23 branches and counting. This free, non-profit offers programs of emotional and social support for those living with cancer and their loved ones.
Handmade paper flowers — folded from sewing pattern sheets by our DIY-savvy ModCloth employees — graced tables as centerpieces.
As guests mingled and enjoyed pre-show food and cocktails, the backstage area was a flurry of excitement and activity. ModCloth employees steamed and prepared our garments for each model, while volunteer hair and makeup stylists dolled the models up.
When it came to the runway show, we decided to break the rules. Unlike traditional shows, each model was introduced — some escorted by loved ones — and walked to a song of their own choosing. Some songs were moving, some joyful, and some silly, but each one fit its owner and their style perfectly. The crowd cheered, clapped, and danced along as each model strutted their strength. After one final spin down the runway by the entire group, the event broke out into a dance party!
