Vintage-inspired Jewelry Collaboration Part I: A Beautiful Mess

Yesterday we gave you a sneak peek at our exciting design collaboration, in which we asked four talented ladies to design vintage-inspired jewelry exclusively for ModCloth! Today we’re unveiling the first piece. It’s a romantic locket designed by the über-creative Elsie, the gal behind the blog A Beautiful Mess, also a talented clothing designer, and a vintage shop owner. (You can learn more about her here.) Elsie drew inspiration from a vintage brooch, transforming it into a pretty statement locket.

The A Beautiful Mess Necklace

“My necklace was inspired by a vintage horseshoe brooch,” says Elsie. “I love mid-century enamel floral pins, so I fell in love with this horseshoe pin with tiny enamel daisies. Growing up, my grandparents were farmers, so I’ve always had affection for horses and Southwestern symbolism. I have many fond memories of riding horses with my sister, dressed up in boots and cowboy hats. I knew I wanted to use the horseshoe, a symbol of good luck, to create my vintage-inspired piece.”

“I chose a locket because I think that every lady wants little ways to carry her favorite memories with her,” she says. “I love lockets because they can keep treasures safe and near by. It’s a little reminder of the love in one’s life! This locket is extra special because it’s oversized. Many lockets are itty-bitty, but this one is more of a statement. It’s a perfect fit for two photos. I love it!”

Elsie models her necklace with the In Perfect Contrast Dress, Front of the Line Tights in Teal, Call You Honey Shoulder Bagv, and Comma on Over Heel.

Lastly, says Elsie, “I chose bronze because it’s my favorite metal to wear. I feel like to goes with almost any outfit! I had so much fun sketching and designing this piece. The design process was incredibly fun… a thrill! I am so honored to see my little dream piece being sold on ModCloth! Thanks for taking a peek.”

How would you style the A Beautiful Mess Locket?

About Turi

When Turi isn’t blogging, you can find her nose behind a book. But reading isn’t her only pastime. She loves running (cue jogging stroller), taste-testing pizza and burgers, and working on the next great American novel. Her latest homage to all things literary? Her son is named after writer Dashiell Hammett. How apropos.
