Vintage-inspired Jewelry Collaboration Part II: Bleubird Vintage

Today is the second installment in our vintage-inspired jewelry design collaboration. As a refresher, we asked four talented ladies to re-imagine a vintage piece in collaboration with ModCloth. We’re super excited to share today’s design with you. It’s a gorgeous pendent necklace dreamed up by Miss James of Bleubird Vintage. She’s a multi-talented mommy who rocks the retro look. For her design, James took inspiration from a vintage piece with a decidedly boho vibe. “The original vintage piece was given to me as a gift from a friend when my daughter Gemma Bird was born,” explains James.

The Bleubird Necklace

“I love how seventies it is. My favorite part about the vintage piece is the shape,” James says.

“I decided to keep the teardrop shape since that was one of my favorite parts and to use turquoise, my favorite stone,” James says. “I then chose to replace the bells with feathers to tie the whole piece together.”

James styled her necklace with the Beach House Barbecue Dress in Luau and the Hayes Valley Boot.

How would you style the Bleubird Necklace?

About Turi

When Turi isn’t blogging, you can find her nose behind a book. But reading isn’t her only pastime. She loves running (cue jogging stroller), taste-testing pizza and burgers, and working on the next great American novel. Her latest homage to all things literary? Her son is named after writer Dashiell Hammett. How apropos.

it looks like an exact copy of the original…just with turquoise instead of multi colored stones and feather instead of bells. I like it, but it doesn’t seem entirely original.

My thoughts exactly. It’s pretty, but isn’t too different than what you could find in any antique store. Or cheap replicas at F21.

I think that it is a beautiful re-imagination. Changing just a few details can really transform a piece, while still maintaining the feel of the original. Turquoise is my favorite stone as well, and I love the feathers. Such a lovely shape and hang.

I really love this necklace… is it real turquoise? Kind of wish it were sterling silver.

Although I like Miss James’ style I have to agree with other commenters that the original “inspiration” necklace is much more attractive then her final product.

The original necklace came from my store. I sent it to her as a gift when Gemma was born.

The original necklace was alright but I love how vibrant James’ re-imagining is — the turquoise and silver is so much prettier than the original stones and dark metal and I love the tiny feathers so much more than the little balls. I feel like this necklace can really be a statement piece, while the original, although nice, blends in to the background. Great work James!
