Vintage-inspired Jewelery Collaboration Part IV: Susan

Well, today is the last installment in our vintage-inspired jewelery collection, and we’re definitely going out with a bang. Susan, ModCloth’s co-founder and Chief Creative Officer was the mastermind behind the re-envisioning of this feathered friend. This adorable lil’ owl necklace is a real hoot, with its custom ikat print and retro appeal. In fact, you might even say it really ‘goes out on a limb’ to be adorable!

“I found this amazing owl necklace years ago at a vintage store in Pittsburgh,” says Susan. “I totally fell in love with its groovy, 1970s feel. I have quite the collection of vintage animal necklaces, and this one in particular has always stood out as a favorite. I’ve never seen anything like it before!”

Susan’s Necklace

“When we embarked on this project, I wanted to update the graphic design to make it feel more current,” says Susan. “Lately I’ve been drawn to colorful geometric prints, so I worked with a designer to create this handdrawn Aztec pattern.”

“Since the owl ‘frame’ was already so perfect – I love his little eyebrows! – we kept that, but made the antiquing detail darker,” Susan explains. “We also added a thick vintage-inspired chain, and increased the length to complement the larger pendant. This was because my only complaint with the original piece is that it isn’t long enough.”

Susan wears her owl necklace with the Gourd Garden Dress, Don’t Shoe Know, Velveteen Habit Headband, Flower Metals Bracelet, and Sparkles and Dots Tights.

“I’m very happy with the final product, and super stoked that customers around the world will now be able to enjoy a version of my favorite vintage owl necklace, too!”

How would you deck yourself out with Susan’s Necklace?

About Turi

When Turi isn’t blogging, you can find her nose behind a book. But reading isn’t her only pastime. She loves running (cue jogging stroller), taste-testing pizza and burgers, and working on the next great American novel. Her latest homage to all things literary? Her son is named after writer Dashiell Hammett. How apropos.

I was a classmate of your dad, and I think he might agree, his 5th grade girlfriend! So…..I can vouch that the Owl was our mascot. Unfortunately for us, the colors were purple and gold! No accounting for taste!
