Last week, we became a little more cultured after seeing a play in our backyard, the Strip District of Pittsburgh. ModCloth piled into the Open Stage Theater to see the No Name Players perform Wonder of the World by David Lindsay-Abaire.

Actually, Wonder tells the story of Cass Harris (played by Tressa Glover, and originally played by Sarah Jessica Parker on Broadway in 2001!) who, after hitting a rocky point in her marriage, decides to chase her dreams to Niagara Falls. On the way, she checks items off her life’s to-do list: find a sidekick, check; have a tryst with a total stranger, check; wear velvet, double check!
Cass’s husband, Kip (David Flick), begs her to stay with him; while her new friend, Lois (Gab Bonesso), walks to answer the door in her bathrobe and shower cap.
Does Tressa look familiar? She’s our own Maggie’s big sis. Tressa and her husband, Don DiGiulio, just arrived back in Pittsburgh after a few years in Chicago. And with them, they’ve revived the No Name Players. Don founded this group in college, and the couple has put together numerous performances, including the American premiere of Big Love that made a splash in the ‘Burgh in 2004. Now, the group wanted to make another ‘big’ statement with their return to Pittsburgh. “I laugh out loud every time I read this script, and I feel that right now, our country needs to laugh,” Don told me.
And laugh we did. Through the play’s twists and turns (including a friend’s deadly obsession with Cosco and group therapy with a clown) Cass searches for a sign-a reason why she is here on earth. She is ultimately driven to test fate in a barrel, but I won’t give away anything else!
After the play, Casey and Rachel re-enacted the barrel scene. So beautiful.
Special thanks to Don, Tressa, and the rest of the Wonder-ful team!
