ModCloth would like to introduce you to an inspiration of ours! Betsey Johnson, legendary New York designer and flamboyant rocker, now has items available at ModCloth. We’ve recently started carrying her amazingly fun tights and socks, and soon we will be launching her shoes. We are extremely excited to bring her exuberant style to you!
Betsey Johnson’s career in fashion has been tried and tested, yet she maintains a one-of-a-kind vision. Since the 1960s, Betsey has celebrated the embellished, the excessive, and the over-the-top with flare and devotion.
Betsey is a native New Englander, and spent her childhood in dance classes. As a dancer, she fell in love with movement and costumes, and these formative inspirations are evident in her design today. She burst onto the New York fashion scene in 1964 by winning Mademoiselle’s ‘Guest Editor Contest,’ and from there, she became embedded in the Warhol Factory scene. John Cale of the Velvet Underground loved wearing her designs, and Edie Sedgwick modeled for her. The 70s saw her entrance into boutique retail, and the 80s marked her focus on label creation.
Luckily for us, the turn of the century saw Betsey’s whimsy applied to tights, socks, and shoes. Her trademark look–sexy silhouettes, hippie-esque lines and prints, and embellished detailing–are a welcome addition to ModCloth. Check out her Houndstooth Tights, Love at First Tights, or Stir Up Tights. Also, consider giving Betsey’s Gift of Socks to someone you love this holiday.
We hope you like Betsey as much as we do–let us know what you think. For more info, check out her fun website.
“Making clothes involves what I like…color, pattern, shape, and movement…I like the everyday process…the people, the pressure, the surprise of seeing the work come alive walking and dancing around on strangers. Like red lipstick on the mouth, my products wake up and brighten and bring the wearer to life…drawing attention to her beauty and specialness…her moods and movements…her dreams and fantasies.”-Betsey Johnson
