Perhaps you’ve heard of a little thing (okay, well not SO little) called Be the Buyer. What’s that? You haven’t? Oh. Well it’s this nifty feature on our site where you can vote on designer samples and tell us if you think they should be put into production or not. In short, you act as a virtual buyer. Pretty cool, right?
One of those fantastic people who’s already out there participating in Be the Buyer is the lovely–sound the trumpets, please–Kendra! This vivacious virtual buyer took some time to fill us in on her super self, and tell us her thoughts about the burgeoning Be the Buyer program.
Where are you from?
I’m originally from Detroit, aka Motown, aka Motor City. About 10 years ago, I left the Jackson 5 records and exhaust pipes behind for the bright lights and big dreams of the Big Apple. Ten more years, and I’ll officially be a real New Yorker!
What do you do? Are you student? Rocket Scientist? Cashier? Chef?
By day, I have an ultra-glamorous career (tongue firmly planted in cheek) as a business development executive for a high-technology firm in Manhattan. After-hours, I enjoy chronicling my daily outfits and excursions around the city on my personal style blog, Closet Confections.
How do you fill up your free time? Have any hobbies?
I also love pretty much anything food-related, especially eating, cooking, and discovering new restaurants. My other favorite pastime is the never-ending search for the perfect vintage dress on eBay. Although I wouldn’t really call that a hobby… more like an obsession!
How would you describe your style?
One thing that helps me anytime I’m shopping or trying to pick out an outfit is to keep in mind the image that I want to project to the rest of the world. Typically, this can be encapsulated in three words. At my current stage in life, those three words are: feminine, stylish, and successful. So whenever I’m trying on new clothes, I ask myself, “Does this make me feel feminine, stylish, and successful?”
Which Be the Buyer item did you just buy?
My recent Be the Buyer purchase was The Dynamite Dress. I’m a sucker for a cute dress, and this one fit the bill perfectly. It can easily be dressed up with heels and a sleek patent belt for date night or dressed down with sandals and a denim jacket for an afternoon of shopping and lunch with the girls.
How did you feel when you found out this item was picked for production?
I can’t lie, it makes me feel kind of important when an item I like is picked for production… like I’m part of the process and making things happen. I thought I was quite the cool kid when it happened.
Which current Be the Buyer items are your favorites?
Right now, I’m crushing on Sample 324 in a major way! I think it would look so classic and feminine with a great belt and fabulous heels. I also love sample numbers 345, 343, 333, and 325.
What do you love most about Be the Buyer?
I originally came to New York hoping to be a fashion merchandiser. But by a weird twist of fate, I wound up working in technology instead. While high-tech does have its perks, I still love feeling like a fashionista. ModCloth’s Be the Buyer program helps give me that little fix. Anything that adds a touch of glamour to my world of bits and bytes is appreciated!
Any other fun facts you’d like to add?
I was a majorette for seven years in middle school and high school, and I still love to break out my baton every now and then to do a few twirls and tosses in the air. I haven’t had the occasion (or worked up the nerve) to wear it yet, but within the last year, I purchased a sweater dress that looks just like a vintage majorette uniform. Told ya I was a sucker for a cute dress! 😉
