As another winter approaches, many of you are looking for clothing that will keep you nice and toasty! We think the best strategy may be to focus on products that are stylish and practical. For example, you may love our new jackets and coats, but which one is best-suited for that walk home from your night class in the middle of January?
To assist you on your journey for the perfect piece of outerwear, we’ve come up with this two-part primer. Pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa, put on your favorite fuzzy socks, and check out our ModCloth Guide to Outerwear: Part 1!

Jackets v. Coats
First off, you may be wondering what we consider the difference between a jacket and a coat. Here at ModCloth, a jacket is a piece of outerwear that comes to the hip. A cropped jacket or bolero is shorter and usually hits at the waist or higher. A bomber jacket “is a leather or nylon jacket with two front pockets, sometimes with sheepskin lining, and a zippered front. The waist and cuffs may be made of elasticized material” (wisegeek.com).
A coat is the longest type of outerwear we sell, usually coming to the mid-thigh or knee area.
In other words, the distinguishing factor between jackets and coats is their length.
Remember, if you have any questions about the the fit of a particular item, be sure to click “Fit and Composition” on the product’s page.
ModCloth Outerwear Guide
Because we categorize coats and jackets according to their length (and not by their warmth) we try to include the weight of the product within the description. Look for the words “lightweight” “mid-weight,” “heavyweight,” “unlined” and “fully-lined” for clues as to how warm the jacket or coat might be.
Here are some examples of outerwear in each category:
