This month, our exclusive collection is modeled by inspiring people & personalities who express their individuality through their passions, actions, drive, & style. They are business owners, writers, artists, style icons, nonprofit organizers, movers, shakers, & groundbreakers. One thing they all have in common? Stories worth telling and statements worth spreading. Style, for real. And #StyleForAll.
Meet Chanel Cross, Artist & Makeup Artist
Hometown: Newport Beach, CA
Hobbies: cooking, arts & crafts, thrifting
Loves: fruits & vegetables, being a pug mom (to a pup named Brisket)
We heard you got interested in becoming a makeup artist through your experience at a previous ModCloth photo shoot. Tell us more.
Yes! I had studied fine art at UC Berkeley and was working in the art industry in LA. I then pursued education and was teaching art to elementary school children. I had maintained a deep lifelong obsession with makeup, but didn’t know that I could make a career out of it. I was modeling at ModCloth shoot in Palm Springs and met hair and makeup artist Ericka Verrett. I fell in love with her personality and love of her job. I told her that I wanted to be her! Haha! She was moving to LA at the [same] moment I decided to move from art to makeup, and she became my mentor, friend, and sidekick.
That’s so cool! What projects do you have in the works, and what’s next for you?
Currently, I’m working on maintaining and building my portfolio by collaborating with incredibly inspiring and creative women.
How would you describe your personal style?
Modest, classic with a touch of French.
In what way is your style a reflection of your personality?
The clothing I like to wear is a reflection of my personality in the way that I feel like I don’t have to be the loudest person in the room. I like to always feel put together, presentable, classic, modest, and timeless.
How has your style evolved over time?
My personal style has gotten refined over time. I used to put too many “fast fashion” items in my closet and wear a lot of standout accessories together at once. Now, I love to have a few quality pieces that I can mix and match and feel like I have a complete look with less items.
Do you have a type of clothing that you’d consider to be your “uniform”?
I am almost always wearing stripes or a touch of black, and an inherited vintage piece. I love flattering cuts, high-waisted jeans, a statement shoe, and stripes.
What was the favorite piece/pieces you wore at the most-recent shoot? What did you like about it/them?
I loved the star printed dress with the sheer gold star layer. Also a linen romper, and incredibly fun prints! I am such a sucker for rompers and jumpsuits!
People often say they want to feel “comfortable” or “confident” in their clothing. What do these words really mean to you?
Feeling comfortable and confident in clothing is completely subjective; that’s the appeal to personal style.
What’s Brisket’s idea of a good day?
Brisket’s idea of a good day is driving down PCH with the wind in his hair. He stops in Leo Carillo dog beach and runs around with the sand in his toes.
Regarding the future, what’s one thing you’re excited about, either personally or globally?
I just participated in a Planned Parenthood charity event; I hope to continue working with charities and fundraisers — it’s so important right now! Also, I want to adopt a cat!
Also regarding the future. What’s one thing you hope to change, either about yourself or about the world?
I hope to spread some bit of positivity everyday.
What’s your motto?
