Mara started her blog, M Loves M, as a way to stay in touch with the other M, her then-boyfriend, now husband, when their relationship became long distance. Since its beginning, the blog has blossomed into a place to share outfit photos, recipes, and other peeks at daily life. In our interview, this LA native talks about dressing for the seasons in Southern California, which musical she daydreams of living in, and where she wants to escape for a winter retreat. You’ll also want to steal a glance at her pretty namesake dress and her most loved ModCloth items.
How do you interpret the seasons with what you wear in LA, where the weather is warm all year?
I try to define the seasons a little more by wearing things that I can easily layer and subtract. Fall can be pretty warm, but the mornings still get cold, especially since I live by the beach. I’m a big fan of bringing sweaters wherever I go, especially since I get cold easily (I have a low threshold!). When it starts to get chillier, and more into our LA winter, I wear more tights and jackets. It’s nice that it doesn’t get too cold, and thankfully we don’t have to deal with snow, but having an 80-degree Christmas is not fun!
Are there any destinations you’re dying to visit this winter?
I would love to make a trip up to Lake Tahoe in Northern California. When I was little, my family would go there for summers and the occasional winter vacation. I love being up there when it’s snowing and seeing all the big, beautiful pine trees. A little winter getaway in a comfy cabin would be such a nice thing!
As a self-proclaimed lover of sweets, what’s your all-time favorite dessert?
Oh boy, that’s a hard one! I have SO many favorites, but one that I especially love is this Chocolate Caramel Slice. It’s like a gourmet version of a Twix bar. A couple of my readers told me it’s a traditional dessert in Australia, which has me thinking I must take a trip Down Under. The Aussies clearly know what they’re doing when it comes to delicious desserts!
Your puppy, Ginger, is so cute! Does she know any tricks?
Ginger is a master of tricks! I swear, that pup is the fastest learner. She knows how to do the basics, but also knows how to shake, high five, jump, get her toy on command, and dance! The last one is my favorite trick because I can just sing and she’ll be on hind legs dancing around! It’s the cutest thing ever.
You really like musicals — if you could live on the set of your favorite, what would it be?
I really, really like musicals! It would be wonderful to live on the set of Singin’ in the Rain. I’d also looove to live on the set of Oklahoma! I had a major crush on Curly when I was little and I grew up singing “People Will Say We’re in Love.” Such a romantic song!
Do you blog full-time, or do you have a day job?
I joke that I have two full-time jobs, working on my blog and also working as a buyer and stylist. While the latter takes up the 9-5, blogging also takes up a big chunk of my evenings and weekends. I am so lucky to be doing things I love and am passionate about. I wouldn’t change it for the world!
What are your favorite blogs?
Oh, so many to name! I’m definitely inspired by Kendi of Kendi Everyday, Tieka of Selective Potential, Taylor of Sterling Style, Jen of Jen Loves Kev, Danielle of Sometimes Sweet, Veronika of Tick Tock Vintage, and James of Bleubird Vintage. I’m constantly inspired by all the amazing bloggers out there, and am lucky to call many of them friends.
