ModCloth: Can you tell us a little bit about your blog?
Alex: I started StreetStyleChi after my freshman year of college at DePaul University in Chicago. At the time, there really wasn’t anything geared towards the young adult who needs some style help and inspiration. I write about things that I find interesting, and that I feel people my age can benefit from. I focus on fashion, beauty, and lifestyle; I just launched the men’s version of my site, and am about to launch a food section as well. My blog grows and evolves as I do, so the content is constantly changing. My blog is my baby!
Who inspires your sense of style?
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve explored my fashion sense more and reached outside of my comfort zone quite a bit. I definitely have a few people that I follow for style inspiration like Blake Lively, Nicole Richie, and [Lucky magazine Editor-in-Chief] Eva Chen, but I mainly get inspiration from random sources. There are a few people on Instagram that I follow because I love their looks and they style things in unexpected ways. I have an album on my phone where I’ll save looks I see, whether it’s snapping a picture of a magazine page or screen-shotting a cool outfit combo, and when I am stuck later on I go back and look at those.
Any fave blogs to follow?
Well, I follow all of the great fashion blogs … Man Repeller, Cupcakes and Cashmere, Chi City Fashion. However, I really love sites that have a little bit of everything, like Four Pins, Hypebeast, and Complex. There is also this Instagram account I follow, @man_X_space. He’s really into interiors, and fun fact: I love decorating.
Do you blog full time?
While I do blog full time, I try to get my hands in as many things as possible. I freelance style, and am in the middle of planning a few fashion events. I want to try a little bit of everything while I still can, but blogging is my main job.
When you’re not blogging, where can we find you? Any unexpected hobbies?
You can probably find me running to a class or working on homework at a small cafe near my apartment building. Unfortunately between working on my site and school, I do not have too much down time. When I don’t have too much going on, I love going to the farmers market or exploring new parts of the city. Wicker Park and Lincoln Park are my two favorite areas. Food has a soft spot in my heart, and I love to cook. When I don’t feel like cooking for myself, I’ll grab my boyfriend or a few close girlfriends and go out.
What are you listening to right now?
I always listen to a lot of Drake … it’s a guilty pleasure. I have a playlist of Lorde, Drake, and some beats by Chicago producer Von Vuai. He makes these awesome, relaxed songs that I can listen to on repeat all day.
What’s on your ModCloth wishlist? Anything you’re hoping to add to your closet?
I am going on vacation in June, so of course I have to grab a few bathing suits! I love pin-up girl style bikinis like the Sailorette at Sea suit and the Seasons of the Sun suit. ModCloth is the perfect site to feed my obsession with dresses; every time I check the site there are ten more that I add to my wish list, like the Pull Up a Cherry Dress and the Field Good Dress. And I ran into a woman wearing these at a Lucky Magazine event in L.A., I hunted them down and knew they had to be mine!
The next trend you’re dying to tackle:
Right now, I adore ultra-feminine silhouettes, they are flattering on everyone and have just the right fit. Also, a matching cropped top and skirt. I love something simple, but that packs a lot of punch. You will never see me wearing something for the sake of being trendy.
And finally, what are you up to this weekend? Any fun plans?
I am actually spending the weekend in Michigan with my boyfriend. We just plan on hanging around with his family, and I get to see where he’s from, so I’m super excited. It will be a nice change of pace from racing around in the city all the time.
