There’s no denying our love of sunnies and sandals, but sometimes a new book can be your best beach accessory. What better way to while away the hours than by hittin’ the sand, unfurling your umbrella, and getting lost in the enrapturing world of literary bliss?

If your reading list needs a refresh, scroll on to discover our favorite shoreline ensembles and the page-turners that inspired them!

C’mon, guys. It’s Shark Week. We had to include it. As long as you repeatedly tell yourself that sharks aren’t native to the beach on which you’re vacationing, this 4th-of-July thriller is a boatload of fun! Read it while sporting a nautical swimsuit, shark-themed looks, and crimson sneakers for a jaw-droppingly delightful afternoon.

Valley of the Dolls, by Jacqueline Susann

It’s shocking, it’s juicy, and it’s entirely impossible to put down. Published in 1966, Valley of the Dolls tells the story of three young women dealing with the perils and rewards of fame, life and love in New York City, and the consequence of chemical dependency. Be sure to lather on the sunscreen before you crack open this controversial novel, because by the time you peel your eyes away, the sun will most certainly have come and gone.

Bringing any David Sedaris novel to the beach is like bringing your smartest, wittiest, and most hilariously straight-forward friend with you on vacation. This acclaimed collection of autobiographical essays will have you laughing loud enough to scare seagulls away. (I mean it!) Read it on the boardwalk, read it at the pool, or read it aloud for a group giggle-sesh you’ll always remember.

Oh, Donna Tartt. How do such beautiful words pour from the tips of her fingers? Take a few hours from your mornings to immerse yourself in the poignant, vivid, and incredibly-written world of The Goldfinch. You’ll fall in love with countless characters, you’ll yearn for a day-trip to the art museum, and you’ll find new love for the bird-inspired pieces in your wardrobe. Please. Read this book. We beg you.
