Fashionably Fair Trade: Say Hello to New Designer Bibico!

Bibico’s utterly charming, oh-so-perfect-for-spring clothes. See all of them here!

Break out the confetti! The ModCloth family just got a little bigger this week, with the arrival of new fair trade designer Bibico.

The UK brand is run by Nieves Ruiz, who spent years designing for leading fashion companies in Europe and Australia before breaking out to create the label she always wanted–one that was stylish, sustainable, and supported fair trade. Bibico’s clothing is sewn by women in co-ops in Mumbai and Kathmandu, and Nieves hopes to economically empower these women and their communities.

What is fair trade, exactly? Fair trade is a movement that aims to create greater equity in international trade, and is founded on the ideas of sustainable development for marginalized producers, and ethical and eco-friendly practices. Bibico is committed to the World Fair Trade Organization’s 10 standards of fair trade, which include:

  • Creating opportunities for disadvantaged, marginalized producers, and enabling them to rise out of income insecurity and poverty to economic self-sufficiency and ownership.
  • Trading with concern for the social, economic, and environmental well-being of its producers. It is responsible, professional, and meets all commitments in a timely manner.
  • Develop the skills and capabilities of its employees, such as improving their management skills, production capabilities, and access to markets (like ModCloth!).
  • Safe, healthy working conditions for employees, and creating awareness about workplace health and safety issues.
  • Transparency and accountability in its management and commercial relationships.
  • Support Earth-friendly practices, like maximizing the use of raw materials, buying locally, and trying to use energy-efficient, waste-reducing technologies and processes when possible.

We’re thrilled to welcome Bibico to our site, and we hope you are too!

You read my mind! I just filled out the ModSquad Street Team survey last night and one of the things I suggested was more sustainable/eco-friendly/fair-trade clothing and here it is! SWEET.

I’m glad because I have done presentations against human trafficking/modern day slavery and constantly am conscious about what I buy and I thought most everything from ModCloth was fairtrade/slave free until I received a couple pieces made in china or areas known for having hard labor for long periods of time with little to no pay.
